To think Reeves being the first female chancellor isn't something to brag about?

I'm not unhappy about the budget but her and Starmer have both cited this as a milestone, apparently forgetting that the Tories have had three female leaders who have been PMs whilst Labour have had none.

I really don't think as a party they are as much of a friend to women that they claim to be.

I actually welled up a little bit when I saw the pictures of her in Downing Street yesterday. I was even more impressed when I saw her implacable face as Sunak raged for 15 minutes.

As you said op the proof is in the pudding.

It’s a bit of a hospital pass. She’s been given a crap job, and will always be remembered as the chancellor with the high tax rises. I bet in a reshuffle at some point the job will be give to a male who can be seen to make concessions and be seen at the “better” Labour chancellor.

Is pointing out that she is the first woman a brag?
I'd say it was more damning indictment of the system than a personal brag .

It’s an historic moment for the country not just the Labour Party. Do you think they should have just brushed over it without mentioning it?

Exactly. How else would anyone have recognised Reeves is a women unless they mentioned it? Some women have a penis. Don't be a bigot.

I did not say Reeves should not be proud of her achievement. On a personal level of course it is a big deal.

But the fact is that Labour are sadly quite a bit behind the Tories when it comes to representation of women and minorities in the top roles, so whilst this is a step forward, they have a long way to go and I think it's disingenuous for them to brag about it.

Well maybe if they had managed to get themselves into government before now they would have been able to do so before now.

But they didn't so they couldn't.

she is an embarrassment to women.

women will continue to be seen as inferior in the work environment if they keep on highlighting the fact they are women (as in they are different to the norm who wouldnt bother mentioning gender, before anyone starts).

just get on with the job, not that shes very good at it...

So you don't understand the concept of "see me to be me".

Most definitely it should be highlighted. It is seeing and hearing that leads to inspiring the next generation. In this case with the encouragement of girls into STEM they can see where STEM can take them (other than as a nurse, vet or GP!)
