To feel deflated after job rejection?

Feeling a bit sorry for myself!

Worked very hard in my career and worked my way up through the ranks in my area. I took a different role at the beginning of the year, out of desperation of working in a very toxic environment and for more flex and more money, but it’s not turned out into what I thought it was going to be at all. I’ve been very quiet and so reassigned into a totally different role which I can’t do and don’t enjoy at all.

I have tried to get back into what I was doing before and have made it to the final stages three times now and fallen at the final offer stage. It’s all a bit soul destroying. And they’ve all been glowing feedback and nothing I did ‘wrong’ but they went with another candidate etc.

got the third no this morning and feeling really deflated. Need to get out of my job but can’t see how. Anyone have any nice hopeful stories?

First, many jobs are already sewn up and interviews are just lip service. I've been to some ridiculous interviews where it was obvious the job was already gone.

Second, they may not think you're a fit for the organisation. It may have nothing to do with your experience.

One time I was interviewed for a position with two people. The environment was extremely toxic and run by a bully. The bully told me that he hadn't wanted me there but his colleague argued in my favour so he reluctantly took me on. I wish I hadn't got the position.

That sucks OP. But take heart that interviewing and doing well? It only takes one!

Is it possible that your unhappiness is coming through in interviews? How are your explaining the desire to move back to your old field?

Can you tell us a bit more? If we had some more info on industry etc we might be able to help. Why can't you do your current job? What Is it about it that you can't do? For example if you said you'd lost out 3 times to a civil service role well that's to be expected because they are difficult to get; if you're losing out to others at Sainsburys for example then it must be a you problem. Info is king, if its 'outing' then name change.

The feedback has been really good, that I would be a great culture fit, clearly capable etc. then it is always an excuse like we chose another candidate who used to work here who came in at the last minute, or we wanted to hire you and another candidate as we liked you both so much but couldn’t get the budget and went with the other candidate.

It is for a high level senior role in a niche area within banking. In my current role I have been assigned to project management and it’s just not where my skills lie and I have no experience or qualifications in it, but lots in the my chosen area.

It's an employers market there are so many people looking for work.
Things have changed massively.
I don't believe you get a message now unless you've actually got the job, where's years ago you'd get a letter telling you.

Get qualified! Project manager is a good place to be in. They'll pay for it too if it's any of the big banks.
