Speeding?

ChilliHeeler1 · 30/10/2024 10:57

Driving along, a guy clad in a fluorescent jacket and a tripod is either filming or taking photos of cars going past, presumably something to do with speeding?
if I was speeding, am I now in trouble?

Or a surveyor?

If you stick to the speed limit you don’t need to worry about being caught!

xILikeJamx · 30/10/2024 11:00

Probably a surveyor taking measurements for roadworks down the line.

Very unusual to see actual people by the road with speed guns these days, and if they are they're usually handheld ones.

You'll be fine

TTPDTS · 30/10/2024 11:02

Probably a survey - I don't think I've seen a speed camera on a tripod.

Classic line though - stop speeding and it wouldn't need to be a concern!

PrincessAnne4Eva · 30/10/2024 11:05

Where we used to live, the locals did a community speed watch a bit like this because they were fed up of people driving dangerously through the village. They had a speed gun and a camera on a tripod. I think they referred speeders details to the police.

We have community ones near us. They have signs up, hi viz and speed guns. I think they just note reg numbers and send you a letter (i think it comes from the community police) telling you off.

Same here.

It’s easy to say don’t speed, certainly in 20 zones it’s easy to have it creep up to 23 before you notice. And that’s three points territory. You should be looking at the road not the speedo.

years ago I had a hire Peugeot that had a limiter you could set, unlike cruise it allowed all the usual acceleration, braking etc, it just wouldn’t let you go above the limit you set. I don’t know why more don’t have that, it was brilliant.

Catza · 30/10/2024 11:10

If it was a speed check and you were speeding then yes. Were you speeding?

midgetastic · 30/10/2024 11:12

Practise makes perfect - if you can't drive at a steady slow speed perhaps yiu should not be driving ?

User364837 · 30/10/2024 11:12

i got caught by a community group with a handheld one once and did get a letter but it was an advisory warning rather than any official consequences. I am more careful now though as I always think if something or someone ran out in front of me, I might not be able to avoid an accident but would feel terrible (and potentially be in serious trouble) if I had been going even slightly over the limit meaning the consequences were worse

User364837 · 30/10/2024 11:14

And yy to cars helping you. I like using the cruise control on motorway/dual carriageway to help me stay at a steady 70 otherwise it’s easy for speed to drift up with others around you going faster.
i can manually set a warning (which I have at 75) but I wish my car would have a limiter/warning which changed with different speed zones

No, it's not "easy to have it creep up". You should have control of your vehicle at all times including control over what speed it's going. Hold your foot steady on the accelerator and periodically glance at the speedometer, it's not difficult.

I'm not talking about creeping a lot just slightly, which in the 20’s is more significant. It’s when cambers, or inclines adjust your speed for you.

your halo must blind other drivers

I’m a slow and steady driver yet your being deliberately obtuse to not see how you can accidentally go from 20-22 without noticing or actually changing anything in your driving

Rubbish. If you're seriously not capable of moderating your speed without continuously looking at the speedometer then your not a good driver. It only takes a fraction of a second to check.

You shouldn't have to rely on a speed limiter not to break the law.

thats 99% of drivers off the road then

As someone who lost their baby to a driver speeding, it takes a fraction of a second to check your speedometer and it is not difficult to prevent your speed from creeping up.

FadedRed · 30/10/2024 12:50

A tip to those people who find it ‘so difficult’ to not speed is to stay in a lower gear in low-speed areas. Unless you drive an automatic, then stay in third gear in 20/30 mph areas, if your engine noise in indicating a need to change up to fourth gear, then you are most likely going at 30+mph and need to slow down.

I’m ever so sorry for your loss.

Shade17 · 30/10/2024 13:45

Impossible to say, could’ve been a surveyor, community speed watch or a copper. What was the limit and how fast were you going?

BourbonsAreOverated · 30/10/2024 13:48

just to clarify I’m talking about 2-3mph when you hit a camber or ever so slight hill that’s barely noticeable. I am not talking about hooning around with your popcorn remap doing 50 in a 30. Just a tiny tiny percentage variant according to the road,

every driver, every single driver on this thread will have done it. Just by those 1/2/3 mph. No one is infallible, which is why that Peugeot I mentioned above was great, just took that away. I’ve done additional driver training through choice, i am motor trade and understand how cars work, I drive an obscene amount of mileage for work so need my license. I’m careful, and need my license.

Yet it still occasionally happen.
