To be worried about being sedated for an extraction?

I need a broken stump of a tooth removed. It's being done surgically because it's a tricky procedure and the dentist has given me three options.

  1. local anaesthetic
  2. sedation
  3. general anaesthetic

A general anaesthetic is out. I've had them before but I know they all come with a risk and it's not worth it for something small like this.

How risk free is sedation? I vaguely remember stories of people dying in the dentist chair. Does this happen? I would much prefer to be sedated but not if it's a risk.

Nervous Nellie here. I had sedation for implants. It's wonderful stuff. I recall very little. Husband had to drive. I went home and fell asleep again. Woke up feeling fine.

Had a GA for wisdom tooth extraction many years ago. Made me vomit alot after, and I developed an infection in the socket. Last year I had sedation for another wisdom tooth removal, it was 100% better experience. Didn't feel a thing, had no recollection of the extraction happening just remember receiving the sedation and then being helped up from the chair to the recovery room to my husband who drove me home. Had a few hours sleep and was fine.

I had a simple extraction (as it turned out but could have needed to be surgical) with just LA. Have another dodgy tooth which will sadly be the same in the future and will definitely go for LA again, even though it almost certainly will be a surgical extraction ( failed root canal although it's been good for 20+ years). I'd personally opt for that OP but speak to your dentist if you're concerned.

I had a surgical extraction done under local and it was fine. I wouldn’t have needed anything more.

I had sedation with a wisdom tooth extraction and it was amazing! I was in tears in the loo before I went in, I was really frightened. I couldn't believe how painless and easy it was. Obviously throbbed a bit once the local wore off, but paracetamol and ibuprofen soon sorted that out.

Honestly, get the sedation, DO NOT get a local. I had a local for a wisdom tooth and it was horrendous and I ended up with terrible bruising and swelling that was so bad I had to go to A & E. The tooth next to it got damaged in the process so had to come out. I was terrified of sedation and even tried backing out at the last minute. 😂

I’m so glad I got it done, don’t remember a thing and was physically and mentally left without trauma. I was completely away with the fairies afterwards but it was a much better experience.

Ask for local anaesthetic and sedation.

If you have some local anaesthetic you'll not be roused so easily from sedation.

Both should work together. Ask if this is an option.

Remember if you do get roused too easily from sedation it can be topped up there and then.

Propofol quite often is used for dental sedation but would be done by an anaesthetist.

OP, the risks associated with sedation depend on your medical history and what drugs they plan to use. For some people it’s very low risk, for some people it’s higher risk than a GA. You’ll need to ask your dentist what their plan is to work out what’s best for you.

Ah right, apologies, I didn't know that.
My point that it isn't casually administered in the way that MJ's doctor did, still stands

I had my tooth extracted under sedation. You just need to make sure you have a friend/partner with you as you’ll still feel the effects for a few hours and won’t be able to drive.

I think the sedation they use on tooth extractions is fairly light. I was unaware but I think I did feel the bit when they pulled the tooth as I became aware of a sensation a bit like when you unexpectedly put your hand on something hot but aren’t aware of why you have an odd sensation for a moment. It wasn’t pain, just odd.

When I came around they told me to keep the gauze in place for a while and I became obsessed with getting more gauze to the point I sent my brother to get some from the local pharmacy! I never used it lol.

I did get some vivid dreams for a couple days afterwards too.

Sedation is blissful. Have it if you can. You won't care if you die in the dentist's chair, it will be a wonderful way to go... seriously, best research the risks yourself if you're worried, but I wouldn't hesitate.

I was sedated for an implant where they are screwing metal into your jaw bone… horrific!
Had the sedation to calm me down and then they gave a local for the pain. AMAZING! Mine was a shot of some greenish liquid — made me think of crème de menthe. I felt vaguely pissed but that lovely warm cuddly phase of being drunk. I thought I was fully aware of what was going on at the time but I couldn’t remember much the next day apart from telling the dentist he was really handsome. He was, that’s my excuse!
