Appalled by fast food customer laziness

Just that really. Taking DC out for a treat and sitting in, every time I've been shocked at how 'diners' leaves their tables. Just this evening, 3 teenagers left everything a mess on their table when there was a bin clearly labelled just 3 feet away from them. Another table, a big family with young kids, left their waste strewn on the table, chairs and all over the floor, others as well, they were just who we sat next to. It was the way they didn't even acknowledge it, just sauntered off looking at their phones, absolutely no thoughts to it.

Meanwhile the place was clearly short staffed and the workers were run off their feet, people shouting when is my order, getting huffy, rude and complaining. Yes I know it's fast food and they were doing their best and pretty well.

I was sat with our DC, patiently waiting, not a big deal, then cleared up every bit of waste and mopped up any spillage.

Surely this is just common decency, takes seconds to tidy, teach kids to put it in the bin, have some respect.

Rant over, just felt the need to get it off my chest. So many lazy, entitled and rude people everywhere.

Don't the ipads clean up?

I work in hospitality. It doesn't just happen in fast food places. Parents in our restaurant let their kids drop food all over the floor, then they just leave it when they go. Its rude, and you know the kids will end up just like their parents.

Whilst I agree to an extent. It’s a lot easier for someone with a broom to sweep it up than someone to pick up lots of little bits by hand ( I do always pick up the big bits )

taxguru · 29/10/2024 05:02

Have you seen the state of the fields after a music festival? Its certainly not just fast food places and not just young chavs.

nickatiara · 29/10/2024 05:50

@anxioussister I think the same about people who throw rubbish out of car windows. Except I wouldn't send them to another plane (they'd just trash that one too) - I simply wish they were all extinguished. I imagine the world without just those particular people.

CoffeeCantata · 29/10/2024 07:10

I think when people behave like this, they're telling you a lot about their personal standards.

I wouldn't like to visit their homes.

Hereforaglance · 29/10/2024 07:29

I worked for yrs in hospitality we always said if they leave this mess tjeir home must be ten times worse and always felt sorry for the kids being dragged up

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 29/10/2024 07:32

DD and DS worked in a local restaurant for a while prior to Uni. Nice place, not cheap and they had a couple of occasions where customers left dirty nappies on the table unwrapped. I mean I cannot even begin to imagine the state of their homes if they think this is ok in a restaurant!

Auburngal · 29/10/2024 07:40

Laziness is everywhere.

At my last job customers at the kiosk dumped their baskets on the floor when they had to leave by the front entrance right by the baskets. We didn’t have the time or staff to gather up the baskets and put them at the front.

This litmus test (see image) reveals everything about a person...also what do they do when no one is watching/social pressure...do they self govern and do the right thing

I always return it, but partly because I think the brief walk there and back is good for me. 😁 It's not exactly a chore.

TranscendentalMedication · 29/10/2024 07:44

Agree with the OP. Inconsiderate people make me sad and feel quite hopeless about the world. Littering, driving too fast, not cleaning up after themselves, generally not taking responsibility for their surroundings.

I always return - I want my £1 back

If it's one that takes a pound coin, then yes, another great incentive! 😅

I worked for McDonald's on the dining area as a customer care assistant and then a customer experience leader for ten years. By the end, I absolutely fucking hated it. Would regularly be told "I pay your wages" and "it's your job to clean up after me" by customers. Was groped by customers more than once too.

One older teenager saw me cleaning a table and deliberately poured a mix of ketchup and milkshake all over it while smirking at me. Closest I've ever come to punching someone at work. Joke was on him though - I used to throw chips on his shit box car so the birds would crap all over it. Also reported him for driving while off his head on drugs.

Not to mention the young scrotes coming in and trashing the place while the managers hid and left the customer care staff to deal with it (often alone- and my McDonald's didn't have security.)

It's a fucking miserable, relentless job and I'd never go back to it. I'd genuinely rather struggle for money than go back into that sort of job because it wrecked my confidence and mental health (and physical health too, developed a varicose vein from standing in one spot for 8+ hours a shift during Covid.)

Hello partner

Yep,I agree with everything you say

Let's not forget the shitting in the sinks/all over the toilets, teens causing havoc, the leaving shitty nappies on the table, the drug addicts, feral teens (and then their parents who come in to scream at us for banning their offspring) and more than once, pissing on the floor

And let's not forget the bloke who threatened to rape me for asking if he wanted sugar for his coffee

And the posh woman who had me by the throat, screaming and swearing at me (I still don't know what that was about)

I've been groped 8 times in 9 years-police do fuck all

I'm lucky in the fact that my managers have been told not to hide and let us deal with it,but it's tough luck if they genuinely are dealing with something else

It's a truly shitty job

FlowersOfSulphur · 29/10/2024 09:05

I do always stack plates, food wrappings etc on the tray - but I leave the tray on the table so staff can see that the table has been used and needs to be sanitised for the next customers. If you clear the table completely, how do they know which tables have or haven't been wiped down?

What about on a checkout and the ignorant customer just fucks the basket full of shopping on the conveyer belt..then looks at you expecting you to unload it for them

Stretchedresources · 29/10/2024 09:16

Yanbu. I always use a napkin to scoop any debris from the floor and table as well as putting our rubbish in the bin.

Tbh I think the people like this probably do have tidy houses. They just don't care when they're out. My house isn't brilliantly tidy tbh.

cart. I always park my trolley back too. I litter pick as well so I'm quite an extreme case.

Surely you can see if it's covered in crumbs? Although I grant it's a bit less obvious than one covered with trays. If it's clear of crumbs then I can't say I'm that bothered about a wipe down. Saying every needs sanitising is kind of OTT. I just want the sticky grot gone.

SighTime · 29/10/2024 09:20

I always tidy up my stuff and I never let my kids trash the place. It's lazy and slobbish to leave stuff.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/10/2024 09:30

The same on planes. On a recent 4 hour flight the staff came around 3 times collecting rubbish and made it clear that it was them who had to clean the plane before the return flight.

The state of some rows that we walked past as we left the plane was astonishing. Wrappers, bottles, handprints on windows, sweets and crumbs all over the floor. Absolutely no effort had been made by those passengers to clean up the mess that they had made. I find it embarrassing on their behalf.

user1467300911 · 29/10/2024 09:35

Of course it is common decency to not eat like pigs and to clear up any child related mess.

This has gotten worse in fast food outlets. The model is to self clear because it helps keep the experience more affordable.

Since prices went up, some diners are seeking better ‘value for money’ by relying on the staff to clear up. Not fair for the staff, and prices will ultimately go up.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/10/2024 09:42

When my kids were little, I would ask for a dustpan and brush. Staff were nearly always ready to clean up, but I think I showed willing. On the odd occasion that they did bring the equipment, I was happy to sort it out.

ObelixtheGaul · 29/10/2024 09:49

cherrysonata · 28/10/2024 19:51

Oh and the same people who leave a mess for someone else to clear up are almost certainly the most vociferous #bekind proponents.

You can #bekind to waiting and retail staff too. It's just a nice thing to do.

Also the same people who complain the UK is 'childist' and whine when a local cafe finally has enough and stops welcoming children

You don't need to do that. We know which tables have been used.

I'm so sorry that has been happening to you too. It's relentlessly thankless and quitting was the best thing I did.

lazyarse123 · 29/10/2024 10:11

I went to the cinema with my dd and apparently the etiquette is to leave your rubbish on the seat tray thing as they clear it up between showings. It felt very unnatural not to take it with me.
You're not wrong about McDonald's some people are just scummy.
