To think that bright LED car headlights need banning?

Drive home this evening at rush hour and the overly bright LEDs seem even worse than ever! The red brake lights are awful too.

I cleaned my windscreen both inside and out but it's not made much difference. I've had my eyesight checked in preparation for the dark nights and new glasses with anti- glare coating on but I'm still blinded! Even tried looking to the side but the lights dare still blindingly bright. Any slight hill they are there right in your field of vision.

I really don't think I can drive much longer and I'm really worried as I live rurally.

Yes, I find them totally awful. So many of them also seem to be badly angled, so right in your face at normal car level. I find it marginally less annoying when I'm driving a van. Quite a few cars have LEDs that have high-rate flicker when dipped too.

SanFranBear · 28/10/2024 19:08

Totally agree.. I have the added joy of astigmatisms in both eyes so I'm blinded and dazzled and I bloody HATE driving at night!

tigger1001 · 28/10/2024 19:11

You are definitely not alone not are ybu. I hate these bright lights and as a result absolutely hate driving in winter.

They are just dangerous

icouldholditwithacobweb · 28/10/2024 19:11

Yes, they're horrendous. Nobody can see with those super bright lights on higher-up cars blinding other drives constantly. I think the RAC actually did a survey that showed that accidents increased 11% as a result of those overly bright headlights being used at night. No idea why they were ever permitted, they're clearly unsafe.

Same and my astigmatism is corrected and I've got anti glare glasses. Not much more I can do

It's a hard one - they're sometimes too bright from the wrong angle, but a godsend on dark country lanes at night!

Also a pain in the arse if you're coming the opposite way when driving in country lanes.

They're bloody dangerous.

Cryingatthegym · 28/10/2024 19:17

Agreed! They've driven me mad for years but seem especially more common this year. It completely wipes out my vision of the road when one is coming towards me and then leaves me dazzled afterwards. Nightmare.

DatingDinosaur · 28/10/2024 19:18

I hate them too. I also wonder how many drivers have the headlamp adjust dial set wrong.

Edited to add - this is a separate dial on the dashboard, not the side/on/off/high beam 'stalk' on the steering column.

I can see perfectly fine on rural roads with my normal lights in my normal sized car (except when there's a massive 4x4 with LEDs coming the opposite way or they are up my arse).

Super rural here & I had someone up my arse with these superbrights recently - so powerful that my car cast a shadow in front of me despite my (ordinary) brights being on. A shadow IN my lights!

It's absolutely nuts how bad these are. I've had to come to a standstill a couple of times cos I'm so blinded I can't see the 6ft Cornish 'hedges' I'm suddenly at risk of driving into.

Judellie · 28/10/2024 19:23

I detest them too. I hope they DON'T get rid of lamp posts as well, as a pp suggested, that'll just make things worse again!

embolass · 28/10/2024 19:23

Totally agree they are awful, accidents waiting to happen. BTW- What should the head lamp adjuster be set at?

LED lights are self levelling, you can't adjust them manually from inside the car as you've shown above

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 28/10/2024 19:27

Totally horrific, I got blinded by a set myself turning into a road on my way home from work. It’s SO dangerous and there’s fuck all you can do when you’re faced with them

Pinkandgreentrousers · 28/10/2024 19:29

Completely agree

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 28/10/2024 19:30

Many modern cars have a tint to the screen that helps with glare. They are also auto levelling so shouldn't be dazzling

tpmumtobe · 28/10/2024 19:32

The auto levelling doesn't work when the car goes over the brow of a hill or a speed bump though, then they are properly blinding.

It's variable, depending on load. Generally, the lowest, most dipped setting (3 or 4) for city driving (as I was told on a speed awareness course).

hattie43 · 28/10/2024 19:32

I swear they are getting worse . I hate driving at night if I don't know the route because of blinding headlights

Well there's another manufacture's design fault then.

BurntBroccoli · 28/10/2024 19:34

I'm dreading driving home next time it rains, even more horrendous and very stressful.

There's also the issue of completely worn out road markings and missing/ broken cat's eyes meaning vision is virtually nil when you add LED headlights into the mix.

It doesn't stop the glare - especially at the brow of a hill.

Completely agree. How it's allowed I don't know. Ridiculous. Hate driving at night.

DisappearingGirl · 28/10/2024 19:39

I agree. There was a BBC article on this a week ago:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3rlrz7rgw0o

When it's dark and raining and one of these is in front of or behind me, I really worry about seeing cyclists and pedestrians as I am just too dazzled to see them.

A car driving at night on a wet road, with bright white headlights reflected on the damp tarmac.

Complaints about headlight glare increase

The RAC now receives more complaints about the problem than potholes.

I agree, but just pointing out you can't manually adjust them internally
