Hand foot and mouth disease

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

looks like my little has hand foot and mouth. The red bumps started showing up today but to their credit they’ve been saying over the last 3 days
’my mouth hurts’
’my foot itching’
my thumb itching’ and I didn’t twig. I feel terrible for that but since seeing the bumps this am, we’ve been to the pharmacist and I feel prepared to tackle it.

my concern- did any parents catch it off their little one? How were ur symptoms?

Also- any tips about how to deal with it?

online says to keep cleaning surfaces. How do you stop a tornado toddler from touching surfaces /toys/ door knobs etc ??? That part seems unrealistic to me but I will of course do regular disinfecting.

You sound a bit over anxious. Its usually mild, my DC had a bit of a nasty 2-3 days with a sore mouth but that was all.

As an adult you've probably already had it. Just take your usual hygiene approach eg handwashing after the loo/ around food.

Btw you know if your child is well enough hand foot mouth is one they don't have to be kept off school/nursery for

FuzzyGoblin · 28/10/2024 12:14

HFM was awful for my youngest so it can vary from child to child. I didn’t catch it but I know other adults who have. It will all depend upon your immunity.

You keep things clean the same way as normal. Hopefully it will pass and be mild, with nobody else catching it but no matter what you do to your surfaces won’t make any difference.

I caught it when my son had it. Wasn’t pleasant but the worst of the symptoms only lasted 2-3 days so not horrendous.
I didn’t catch it when I was young so that may have made me more susceptible to catch it. Plus my son was teething at the time so dribble everywhere!!
You can get a throat numbing spray from the pharmacist to help with eating and drinking

Thank you all for your feedback. Will just take things as they come.

We've had it 3 times here! Ds had it twice quite mildly, the third time was awful for him, the blisters were everywhere... and I mean everywhere. Neither me or OH caught it though, all I did was wash bedding and towels more often on a 60degree wash. No extra cleaning really.

Hope your dc is better soon

Gerithegiraffe · 28/10/2024 12:33

Ds has it at the minute. Literally all over his body. 2nd time getting it in 2 months. First time was mild this time is hell. I’ve some blisters round my mouth but would honestly happily take all his. The poor wee darlin just looks so sore

DD (24) caught it earlier on this year. She was very unwell with it. She started off with a frighteningly high temperature, then when the spots came the itching was unbearable.

I’m so sorry and wish him better really quickly. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it and was in the most shock when I realised it was either that or chicken pox. You do expect these illnesses but when they appear out the blue it’s still a shock

It's ripping through our local schools. Dd said one evening she had a sore throat, the next day said her mouth hurt. Then she had a mouthful of ulcers which made anything to do with moving her mouth hard - eating, swallowing, drinking, smiling, talking, opening mouth to clean teeth But over the last couple of days she's come back pretty much to normal. She went to school as usual and was okay there. We've just had to think about foods that could just slip down easily without too much mouth action needed. Fortunately nothing appeared on either hands or feet.

Ds now says his mouth feels prickly...I think we know what's coming!

takealettermsjones · 28/10/2024 14:03

It hit my middle on holiday, thankfully the hotel let us hire a pushchair as she just couldn't walk with all the sores on her feet. She wasn't very unwell but immensely itchy, and her mouth hurt so she had lots of ice cream! We didn't catch it at all.

Didimum · 28/10/2024 14:05

Practice good hygiene, but no point getting anxious about it – each case will vary. Yes, me and DH caught HFM when our twins had it. My DH had the blisters on his hands and feet but his mouth was fine, whereas I developed the blisters in my throat but not elsewhere. Took about a week to clear up for us all. My throat was very sore, yes, but we will lived to tell the tale.

dairydebris · 28/10/2024 14:09

We've had it. 1 DC very ill the other no where near so. Just wanted to let you know it's most infectious before spots come out so personally I wouldn't bother going mad with cleaning etc. You've either already got it and symptoms not shoeing yet but on their way, or already had it so you'll be find.
It really doesn't last long and you've already done the worst bit. GL!

Thegirlwithnousername · 28/10/2024 14:11

My DD5 just had this, she had it's quite bad but cleared up quickly. No one else in the family caught it..I just did our regular cleaning.

greekislandsparty · 28/10/2024 23:55

I’m pretty sure Lo got it from school too. Honestly since starting, it’s been one thing after another. But I guess this is what they mean by herd immunity
