To think shots for parents while kids trick or treat is bad?

I'll start by pointing out I am a recovering alcoholic and I really do no think I am only of those preachy people that now look down on anyone for drinking.

In a group (mainly US based) about sobriety I am in one lady was saying in her area people now hand out alcoholic shots to the parents when the kids trick or treat. Some people are defending it saying just because she has a problem with alcohol doesn't mean that every one does. I completely agree. But I really do not think there is a need to hand out shots while the kids are out trick or treating. '

Some even said on local mum groups people are sharing maps of which houses will be participating.

AIBU or is this normal?

It happens where I live. It's generally people you know from school that offer you booze to help you get through the guising. They wouldn't offer it to just random people. .

I wouldn't have an issue with mulled wine at a Christmas event.

What's the difference?

At the Christmas event I'd imagine that they are going to be staying in the house with you and sitting there chatting while having their wine. Not taking a shot and moving on - which is what it sounded like the Halloween one was.

@Firealarm1414 I often see women on that group talk about mini bottles. How they used to buy them and keep them in their bag, are they very common in the US? I have only ever seen them on planes/ similar here never in Tesco in a multipack

You can buy a mini bottle of wine in any supermarket here. They wouldn’t be sold in a multipack as that defeats the object.

I would buy them - not to carry around in my bag but because sometimes I fancy a glass of wine at home but won’t finish the bottle within the 3 days. So ended up throwing loads of wine away.

@Delatron Yes I have seen the mini wine bottles, I've even bought them when I still tried to convince myself I could moderate my drinking, just never mini gin or vodka etc

Ah they do cans of gin and tonic and vodka. You can get pre made cocktails and even frozen shots. Think they are all in cans though rather than bottles.

Yes, the liquor store would have bins full of different small bottles of spirits. Even at the gas stations where I am they have them and every other type of alcohol. My state is fairly lax re alcohol though with 24/7 drinking laws.

I’ve seen this. When it says shots it doesn’t mean a shot glass with liquids. It means those tiny little bottles you can get like when you’re flying. Sealed bottles

We get the minis, but we don't use those for Halloween tbh.

I never ever thought that one of my neighbours would be trying to spike me or some such. And I have made it through and survived plenty of years of Halloween do's and then the street get to together.

There may of been a headache the next day for those who went to every house, but nothing more than that has ever been brought to my attention.

But its summer here and we have a very outdoor culture when this type of sharing is quite normal.

Staying in what house?

I'm talking about Christmas events. Nearly all of them...carol singing, Winter Wonderland, Community nativities, all sorts of events where it's common to see mulled wine served.

Yeah… that doesn’t seem very wise on a number of levels.
