Surname being mispelt

Mumoushka · 27/10/2024 20:01

We recently approached a local estate agent for a property evaluation. DP called and gave details of his surname, my surname, his email address and the property address.

After the valuation he received an email addressed to Mr and Mrs "his name". He wrote back pointing out the error and supplied my name. A second email came addressed to Mr 'his name' and Ms 'wild misspelling of my name'. He sent a reply repeating the correct spelling. Again they mistyped it. Today we opened a letter from their sister company with a fourth incorrect spelling of my name!

They also gave us a detailed market appraisal.....for next door and not our house.

DP feels I should be more aggrieved at the incorrect market appraisal and shouldn't make too big a thing of the incorrect spelling.

This has annoyed me as the misspelling of my name so many times has upset me. It s three syllables and phonetic so not the hardest to spell but it s not English. Naturally I m a little sensitive about it as my parents had a lot of unpleasant comments about being foreign when I was growing up back in the 60's and 70's and this incident has brought all that back.

AIBU to bring this up when I write to them telling them that we won't be using them or should I stick to the ridiculous Market Appraisal of the house next door as the reason?

It sounds like their attention to detail is pretty shoddy so I'd go with a different estate agent and tell them you won't be moving forward with them because if they get your name wrong and your property address wrong they will probably get lots of other things wrong too.

I’ve stopped using estate agents for less! It’s so rude, and if they aren’t sharp enough to be able to copy a name down and use it, I wouldn’t trust them with a purchase of hundreds of thousands of pounds!!

YANBU. Tell them both issues. Their lack of attention to detail is concerning and has lose them a customer.

OchreLeader · 27/10/2024 20:04

I wouldn’t take it personally, but at the same time they sound very unprofessional. If they can’t get something as simple as the spelling of their clients name, then what are they going to be like further down the line.. 😬

It's their lack of attention to detail, both regarding the name and the incorrect property appraisal

I'm totally with you on this OP.

I've got a relatively uncommon surname, courtesy of my late DH. The spelling of the surname that we have also is a different one from others who have the same name. Every time I spell the name out when I have to give it and every time people get the spelling wrong because they just don't listen. It's resulted in all sorts of problems: bank accounts with the name spelt incorrectly, emails not being received, cable tv accounts with incorrect details. Ad nauseum.

I get absolutely irrate because in my opinion getting someone's name wrong is not only incompetency it is insulting: showing they don't regard you as important enough to matter.

So I absolutely agree you should ditch these agents.

Well my single name was ***.

My married name is ***

The first was forrin, and remarked upon, the second is English and not phonetic in the least. People could/can pronounce neither and can spell neither although the second is harder.

I can't be bothered to let it worry me - the comments irk a bit but a hard Paddington stare suffices. Also I don't expect much from estate agents but they make less shitty comments than doctors and teachers ime.

The asterisks were supposed to be the number of letters but that didn't work. 11 and 17 respectively.
