I know periods are different for everyone but I feel like mine are way too heavy. I leak through pads and tampons, I have to sit on the toilet and the blood just floods out, all my clothes get ruined. once I leaked through my tampon ( I’d put a pad on too ) through my pyjamas and it has gone through the mattress protector and destroyed the mattress with a huge blood puddle. even in the shower it’s so heavy and my periods limit what I can do? is it worth making a doctors or is what I’m describing just a normal heavy period? for example I have to change my pad every time I use the toilet as it’s completely soaked and usually I’ve leaked :(

There’s medication that can help with this.
I suffered for year without realising there was help available. I think it’s transanic acid (or something like that)

Mine are heavy too, but not to the point you have described. See your GP ASAP and maybe push for a gynae referral. You should not have to tolerate periods this heavy. Get your iron and heamaglobin level checked too, you may need a supplement. Just to add - I always try and see female Doctors about this stuff as males tend to be more dismissive, so if you can, see a lady Doctor. They are more likely to explore options and look into whats going on and why!

No that's not just heavy periods.

In your shoes I'd make an appointment with my GP, if you can get one. And don't be fobbed off with 'that's just the way things are for women'.

Too many woman suffer in silence with this sort of thing.

Tranexamic acid. I take this too.
OP, if yours have always been heavy, or have for a long time, then it’s “normal” for you (inverted commas because it’s not technically “normal”, but it could be your “normal”) and see a GP for some tranexamic acid tablets. However if this is new for you, get checked out.
If you’re late 30s or older, it could well be peri, but still get checked out if it’s new

The only thing that worked for me was the mirena coil. I was ill with periods. Very anaemic and really struggled to do anything 3-4 days a month because I needed to be at the loo every 20-30 mins.

That sounds like a lot!

I had heavy periods (a super tampon could last maybe an hour and I also used to gush so I had blood leak straight down the side of a tampon 5 min after I put it in) and I was miserable. People mostly just said it seems like more than it is. I went to the doctor a couple of times but was more or less left to struggle.

You should try and measure how much to give the GP an idea. eg How long to fill a super tampon on each day of your period? I find pads just leak so aren't a good measure. Menstrual cups are good because they hold a lot and have a measure to tell you how much is there. And definitely get your iron checked.
