I should clarify. I don't mind it when celebs really do come from a working class background (i.e. where there parents were working class throughout their lives). It seems celebs and politicians are keen to hide details of their parentage/grandparentage, presumably so they can pursue their 'I'm one of you' themes.
On that note, and I'm curious, what were the backgrounds of Caitlin Moran's grandparents? I really love Caitlin, her books and columns and I know she grew up poor on a council estate. But I also saw her mention somewhere that her maternal grandparents played a big part in her life.
I just wondered if they were working or middle class (teachers perhaps?), whilst her parents decided to go down the 'hippy' route.
Caitlin is clearly exceptionally bright but if her grandparents were educated and spent a lot of time with her and her siblings, I still think the cultural capital should be acknowledged if that was the case.
On the face of it, Caitlin's is an inspiring rags to riches story but, in reality, in most cases I don't think those who live in poverty on council estates (with parents who are perhaps not even working, and nor 'educated') make that journey. And, as we can see in TV/film, less so now probably than a few decades back.
