Could I be in early menopause?

Posting here for traffic (sorry!) happy to have this moved to the right board if necessary. I’m a bit shocked, I’ve only just discovered that my local hospital has an online portal. I received a digital letter today as I have an urgent 2 week referral appointment for abnormal bleeding and I need an colposcopy. I logged in to see the letter. I saw I could access old test results. Logged in using my NHS login details. Back in 2018 my Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) levels were checked and were 4.9. I was 28 at the time. So that’s low. It’s in red too saying they’re low. I had no idea this test was even done let alone that they were abnormally low. Had also never even heard of this test before. As far as I understand it this means my egg reserves are low. Surely I should have been told about this?! It can be an indication that I will perhaps experience early menopause. I’ve had symptoms like irregular bleeding, hot flashes, night sweats and crazy mood swings. I’m only 34. Considering this was 6 years ago surely they would be significantly depleted now? My mood swings especially are horrendous. I was even made to see a psychiatrist. I’ve looked through my GP records from around that time and they were never informed.

AIBU to think this is quite a significant thing to have not been told about? Of course women’s health has once again been overlooked and I’ve been made out to be unstable when there could very well be a possibility that it’s actually completely medically related rather than mental instability. They even made me see a psychiatrist!! I’ve been put on mood stabilisers when it could actually be early menopause.

Anyone on here had low AMH levels this young and have any insight? Thanks so much in advance. Luckily I had my babies relatively early and don’t want more children. Genuinely shocked I wasn’t told about this or is it not that big of a deal? Also any advice for my upcoming colposcopy would be so appreciated. Pap smears just about send me over the edge! Have no idea what I’m in for really.

Just to be clear. I’m not looking for medical advice. I’m seeing a gynea soon. Just curious about others experiences with something similar.’

really sorry this has happened to you - awful!

completely different but I was seriously ill in hospital after an operation caused some complications… and it affected my brain temporarily.

As I hadn’t been (and was never) told about my very serious (physical) illness I thought I was going crazy and called the psychiatric team…

i only found out what was going on weeks later via my community health team at a routine catch up.

Much less serious long term consequences there in mine than yours - wasn’t sure if worth sharing. But it made me really lose trust tbh!

I’m truly sorry your info was not shared with you about something so important.

Ps I do think it’s a really big deal. It should have been flagged as it was marked as low.

It also points towards your referral to a psychiatrist being unwarranted and unhelpful (potentially).

For early menopause a good indicator can be when your mum and maternal grandmother started their menopause. I should have known - my mum was 46 and my Granny late 30's. I was peri-menopause in my late 20's (regular periods, but often heavy, but flooding which was never discussed then). By my mid-30's effectively infertile (egg quality - poor numbers, and poor quality).

Yes your result should have been flagged and communicated to the GP. As you say women's health is often ignored. Perhaps follow up why it wasnt reported.

Thank you so much for your replies and for validating my feelings. They even diagnosed me with Cyclothymia (a type of Bipolar)!! @socialdilemmawhattodo unfortunately my Gran passed in 2019 and my mom doesn’t know when she went through the change, it’s a long story, but they were estranged for a long time while she was married to my father. He made her cut ties with her whole family. Thank goodness she left him eventually but that’s not information that was ever spoken about once they were reunited as far as mum can remember. My mum had a radical hysterectomy at 29 so that doesn’t help either 😣 she went into menopause very young but it was because of the operation.

@MenopauseQuestion2024 that sounds so hard. Your mum obviously had a difficult time all round. And sorry to hear about your dad's controlling behaviour. But a hysterectomy at age 29? That sounds very unusual. That might be worth exploring. (Sorry my knowledge on these things is very limited)

MenopauseQuestion2024 · 27/10/2024 17:16

@socialdilemmawhattodo No, it wasn’t that anything was medically wrong with her womb exactly. She fell pregnant with the copper coil. The coil slipped at 32 weeks and sliced her uterus open. She was pregnant with her 5th baby. My baby brother. They both nearly died and the coil did so much damage. Another pregnancy was out of the question so they did the hysterectomy during her emergency C-Section. Was really awful. But before that she was completely healthy with absolutely no gynea issues.
