Mario Kart

I refuse to let my kids win at Mario Kart. If they win legitimately, I'm really pleased for them. But no way will I slow down to let them pass. I'll protect you from the hard parts of life as long as I can kid, but if you're in front of me on the last corner and I have a red shell, you're going down.

I trained for 30 years. Now they must train also.

I agree with you OP. I invested far too many hours honing my skills as a kid to just let mine win willy nilly!

I was more willing to let them win when really young. But now they're older it's game on.

When my son was tiny we had a kids' card game called Pairs. Can't remember exactly how it worked but it was a memory game. When we first played it I remember thinking I'd have to let him win here and there. No need to worry about that. Turned out that this barely verbal child had a memory like an elephant and could beat me hands down every single time. He's good at pub quizzes now (in his 30s). Grin

Oh yes. No mercy. They're still better than me 😭. But at least they know they are genuinely better.

On a related note, does anyone besides me really hate the Rainbow Road circuit? I always fall off.

Rainbow road is my favourite! Hate walluigis pin ball 🤢

mamajong · 26/10/2024 13:45

I completely agree, I adopted this strategy but now they can all beat me easily and there are new Kings in town! 🤣

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGGG · 26/10/2024 13:48

🤣 I do NOT play when it comes to Mario Kart.

I’ve played on the DS, WII and now the Switch so why the fuck would I let anyone win?!

I can't do rainbow road it makes me feel so nauseous I have to lie down!

Same op- no retreat, no surrender when it comes to MK 💪

The day my nephew finally beat me, I was humbled. But the win was sweeter for him.

Elsewhere, my DS(8) has started shouting orders at me while playing Overcooked... The trash talking days are here.

Overcooked! I'd forgotten how good that is, the shouting the orders at each other is the best bit 🤣 I know what I'm going to be doing with my Saturday afternoon now.....

Yanbu. One of life's lessons

Bubobubo · 26/10/2024 13:52

Rainbow Road mirror level [dead]

I have never let my kid win, he just learned to fairly quickly. I was very good at the Mario kart app they brought out.

changedusernameforthis1 · 26/10/2024 13:55

My Dad did to me with chess. Refused to let me win, and insisted on weekly chess games. I used to get so frustrated 😂
It was years before I beat him, and he was genuinely shocked. I was so proud that day!
....never beat him since 😂

Love a bit of Mario though!

LiamNeesonIsADerryGirl · 26/10/2024 14:28

@Bubobubo I remember spending hours, absolute bloody hours of my life trying the get a star rank on mirror rainbow road on the Wii to unlock Rosalina for DS. He reset/deleted the whole thing because he thought I would enjoy doing it again. I have refused to play since!

I think you must go one of two ways with this. I went fully the other way! My mum is extremely competitive, and with her many many kids and grandkids she's had a rolling competition to see who could beat her at a game (let's call it backgammon) and keeps track of the age we managed it. So for example my oldest brother was 22 when he beat her, vs my nephew being only 13. It's a bit of a banter filled sword fight between everyone, with mum in the middle pulling all the strings. Has this weird undercurrent that she uses it to play us all off one another. So for that reason, I've never competed. I can play backgammon, I'm actually very good at it. But I don't try to beat mum. Not interested in the bigger game at play!

Whereas my SUPER competitive 5 year old is determined to be the youngest ever to beat her (DNephew is the reigning champ). DS wants to do it whilst he's still in single figures. Watch this space!

But put me in front of sonic and I'm the competitive mother 😇

Have you played taco, cat, goats, cheese, pizza? Gets seriously vicious!!

Great game, although I mess up the groundhog every single time. It just does not stick in my head what I'm supposed to do
