AIBU to think this displays a breathtaking lack of self-awareness from one of the richest men in the world?

Well, how about you make a start with that Charles?!

I’d start with getting the Catholic Church to sell its gold and land.

Why just the Catholic Church?

I've got a brilliant idea. Why don't we tax everyone using the same taxation system. So no one is exempt from inheritance tax, everyone pays income tax on their income and it's isn't voluntary for the King. That'd be a good start.

What? You mean every single person paying the correct tax they are supposed to be paying on their income, fair and square? That’s just crazy talk!

I'll just point out that the entire basis of English society has been to stop that happening for ... well over 1,000 years.

And it has been incredibly successful at it. Why do you think so many other countries send their elites here to go to school ? It ain't the weather.

Becles · 25/10/2024 10:12

Perhaps the Royal family, including William and Kate's household could finally publish their equality data or what precisely they are doing with the double figure percentage increase in the amount the government gives them.

After all, why are they refusing to share the ethnic make up of their staff? What about the number of bme staff who keep taking the Royal family to employment tribunal for race discrimination and a hostile working environment? Let's start closer at home Charles, then we can talk about the rest of us.

SundayBloodySunday · 25/10/2024 10:15

Honestly, it's hilarious that Charles has said this. Talk about people in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones. It's really cheered me up though. Very funny.

For some reason I have a memory of a scene from Blackadder II, where Blackadder asks Baldrick about how popular he is ....

I agree. If he just gave it all away, it would lead to short term benefit, or benefit for a small number of people, because of the way the system is.

He's calling for systematic change for the wellbeing of the population. This is part of his job description, after all...

Yup. The old saying holds true. "Give a man a fish and he'll eat that day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life".

Craftymam · 25/10/2024 10:25

I think the man means teach them fishing as opposed give them a fish.

But I agree it is quite comical when you looked at it plainly.

Mischance · 25/10/2024 10:29

I do not think he is wise to "tackle inequality" - there is no way he can be taken seriously on this subject.

Paintbyalphabet · 25/10/2024 10:30

Id do a small change and make sure every car park in the country was free. Moreso if it permits access to the countryside/coast.

User14March · 25/10/2024 09:23

@Elphame which advert?

There was a job advert for a full time domestic staff vacancy at Windsor Castle a few weeks ago. They put the advert up with a salary of £22K (below minimum wage for a 21yr old). It was reissued at £24K after this was reported. It's now a smidgeon above but only just.

I’d have a look at the Church of England and its direct involvement in chattel slavery. All the papers are viewable at Lambeth Palace.

Because it is insanely wealthy

Well start by selling Lambeth Palace. Plenty of housing could be put up there.

So we should destroy all our culture and historic buildings for the sake of a few overpriced houses?

Are the RF the ultimate in "benefit scroungers"? 🤔 😆

In the U.K.? Because I seem to remember learning 8n history about how the crown took all that.
Not a catholic myself, incidentally. Just think there are other religious organisations also hoarding wealth.

But for there to be systemic change for the wellbeing of the population there would need to be seismic shift in the vast, and perpetually maintained, immense inequality in our society. Charles and his family sit at the very top of the inequality pyramid. Given this, why is he giving advice, of this kind, to people all the way at the bottom of this pyramid? He has no idea what’s like to be on the wrong side of inequality. He has no idea what it’s like to be poor, to make a decision between heating or eating, or to be forced to use loan sharks because he suddenly has no money for either. Given all of this, isn’t his message just just really insincere?

Most religions do but the Catholic Church is especially bad for it.

You call it overpriced houses.

I call it equality 😀

We don't live in a communist state (thankfully) I don't object to having "inequality" as such so long as everyone had equal opportunity to be able to choose to have a home, food, employment and good health.

How much do you, honestly, think a house would go for on that site? Is that true equality?
E2A yes you can if you work in that sector and the mind and soul needs nourishing as much as the body.

Well most religions are wealthy at the very top.
And as much as I believe the RCC should free up some of their wealth, income comes via donations not through taxes (and through wealth management obviously).
