Why are girls uniforms so short ?

I have a 3yo son and 2yo girl and now my 3 yo is going to school it gets me thinking. Why are school uniforms for girls so short ? I feel like I’m insane, because I was shown a skirt and to me it seemed ridiculously short and no one seems to see the problem ? I would never wear such thing myself especially to exercise. I don’t really get it, seems they are treated like this from young age and then they are being punished when older when skirts are too short ? Can someone tell me there are going to be some changes ? As also if my girl wears trousers won’t she be alienated by other girls ? 😔

I bet most school skirts are actually the school's regulation length when they leave the house but are rolled up on the way to school.
I was a dab hand at this 40 years ago , but I was wrangling with an actual kilt, not just a pleated skirt.

Secondary age girls roll up their skirts. I didn't find that the primary age skirts were too short though. Do you have a choice of styles? The pleated ones give more freedom for running around in the playground.

This.
I would completely agree with you if commenting on Secondary girls skirts (or rather how they chose to wear them) - our little high street is awash with near visible bum cheeks at 3.30! Never mind self respect, what about safety!
But primary? Never had that problem

My kids always wore skorts, you can even buy skort style summer dresses these days ….much more practical for the climbing frame!

I'll happily rant about the impracticality of girls' primary school uniforms. No option of trousers here and girls' school shoes are awful. I don't think the skirts are short though, DD's are just below the knee which is fine with me.

I agree about secondary school uniforms though. All the secondary schools near me have full length skirts and uniforms, above the knee is unusual where I'm from. So I do find the very very short skirts some wear a bit strange.

The regular uniform (in our school) is supposed to be to the knee and skirts are available in different lengths. Older girls roll them and get told off every once in a while.
Younger girls don't care (about rolling them shorter) but in our school would wear their sports skorts underneath as they often had to sit cross legged on the floor - this wasn't a requirement obviously but the girls themselves did it. I think they can now wear trousers but the primary part have summer dresses.
We did have a problem with the games skorts. Once a girl started developing they became increasingly problematic til it was decided they needed to wear leggings! So now poor girls were doing sport wearing four layers! We went back and forth with the manufacturers on that one.
If your girl has long legs and the skirts are the standard Tesco type it is tricky!

You can get knee length skirts everywhere. Older kids may roll them up. DD and her friends do but then wear shorts or leggings or thick tights underneath. They also have the option of wearing shorts or trousers and some do.

I'm old, as my user name suggests, and I was driving past our local high school and I was aghast at how short the girls' skirts were. I was talking to my friend on the phone about it and she snorted with derision, reminding me of the time when I was collared by the headmistress because from behind it looked as if I wasn't wearing a skirt at all as it was the same length as my blazer. But the primary school children locally don't have very short skirts at all, and a lot of the girls are wearing trousers.

Smartiepants79 · 25/10/2024 11:30

Trousers are fine.
pinafore dresses are good for young girls.
All of the girls skirts at my school reach to at least their knees.

FestiveBakewell · 25/10/2024 14:10

Nope not noticed this at all but then DD wears leggings under her dresses as she doesn’t like tights. We do have trousers but she prefers the dresses, can’t say anything of them are “short” 🤷🏻‍♀️ secondary is different but as pointed out that’s because the girls are rolling them up.

Teacherontherun · 25/10/2024 14:15

We have a " no skirts rolled up" policy at school so some of our kids have action had their kilts professionally shortened. Not much you can do when parents allow it, I despair

Obviously I don't know your daughter but mine would have been delighted to go to school in trousers. Primary uniform where I live seems to be ok, it's at secondary that the girl's skirts turn into pelmets (sound like my mum).

@Vicyes there's something very off about you posting pics of teenage girls bums on various uniform threads
