To hate the phase "you look tired"

Ok maybe I am being unreasonable because I am absolutely exhausted but I HATE this phrase. I think it's just another way of telling you that you look like shit 🤷🏻‍♀️

Someone said it this morning and I just felt like saying so would you if you saw every hour with a screaming child lol.

I remember my dad came to see me in hospital the day after having my son and he just looked at me and said "oh you look tired" well actually I've just spent 14 hours in labour I bloody am but thanks for pointing it out 😂

Maybe I am just being over sensitive at the moment lol

I agree, I don’t think it’s ever well received. Maybe if someone can tell a friend isn’t on best form it would be better to say “How are you doing?” rather than inviting more stress into their life by criticising their appearance.

Katemax82 · 22/10/2024 09:18

I used to get this all the time when I was sat on my till working at sainsburys. After years of it I started saying "thanks!" Sarcastically

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/10/2024 09:20

It’s a kindness among the people I know - lots of us have babies or young toddlers - and the reply is usually “yep, had a shit night” which elicits sympathy and solidarity.

I get this all the time. I dont wear make up which makes it worse.

CryptoFascist · 22/10/2024 09:24

I used to get it all the time when I was younger, even when I wasn't tired, had put on full makeup etc. In fact people seem to think it's ok to just critique someone's face.
It's bloody irritating!

I just reply, ... i was up all night with him indoors, but he's a very happy man! So hows your love life then? 😉 that usually shuts them up 😆

AgileGreenSeal · 22/10/2024 09:41

I get this quite often (I am almost always exhausted) and usually just say cheerily “yes, I’m exhausted. Thanks for noticing”. 😐

Yeah it's always meant in a caring way in my circles. I do have days when I look tired after a hard night

Pillarsofsalt · 22/10/2024 10:01

The person is showing concern.

zaxxon · 22/10/2024 10:08

I get it all the time, I've got a tired face. It doesn't really bother me. I remember all the late nights out and fun I had in my 20s and 30s, and think, it was totally worth it!

professionaloverthinker · 22/10/2024 10:12

@Pillarsofsalt I know they are which is why I'm never rude in response. I just hate the phrase that's all

TheGoddessFrigg · 22/10/2024 10:13

I hate it because even if you do look tired- there's nothing you can do about it. So not only do you feel like shite, you now know you also look like shite 🙃

professionaloverthinker · 22/10/2024 15:47

@TheGoddessFrigg exactly! I'm always paranoid about the bags under my eyes (that would definitely fit a monthly shop in) then someone says that so makes it worse lol

Hate it. I find it so rude

StripyHorse · 22/10/2024 16:07

I think it is OK to tell someone close to you that they look tired if it is then followed with support to help them rest. E.g. why don't I take the children to the park for a while so you can get some rest.

Apart from that - yes, it's rude.
