Hi, my daughter has been having a nosebleed for the past 20 minutes or so. Have tried everything to stop it, head forward, pinching the soft part of the nose continously. There is ALOT of blood. Waiting for 111 to call back. AIBU to A&E for this? I don't drive, don't know if a taxi would take us. Photo shows some of the blood.

Wrap some ice in something and put it on the back of her neck. Head forward, pinch soft part of nose. How old is your daughter?

She's 7. Have been trying all of this since it began but can't get it to stop or slow down

I think a nosebleed that lasts that long without slowing down will need a trip to A&E, take a towel in the taxi.

Try to stay calm I'm sure it'll be nothing but best to get it sorted.

Sweetsweettoot · 22/10/2024 02:15

Does she get them often?

I would definitely call a taxi and get to A&E.

Advice from NHS website:

Go to A&E if:
You have a nosebleed and:

your nosebleed lasts longer than 10 to 15 minutes
the bleeding seems excessive
you're swallowing a large amount of blood that makes you vomit
the bleeding started after a blow to your head
you're feeling weak or dizzy
you're having difficulty breathing

whenemmafallsinlove · 22/10/2024 02:18

It always looks like more than it is but given you can't get it to slow and she's little and this has never happened before then call an ambulance now

Glitterblue · 22/10/2024 02:18

From the little I know, you should seek medical attention if there’s a lot of blood and if it doesn’t stop in 20-30 minutes. I know you’ve called 111 but they can take ages to call back so I think I would take her to A&E and like PP said, take a towel in the taxi. Try not to panic, I know that’s easier said than done, but medical professionals will know what to do. Keep us posted, I hope it stops soon.

ImustLearn2Cook · 22/10/2024 02:20

Take her to A&E. Cold compress for forehead and neck. Wet facecloths and squeeze out excess water is a good cold compress.

Soothe her and keep her calm because crying can make her nose bleed more.

I hope she is ok and her nose stops bleeding soon. 💐

Lozza70 · 22/10/2024 02:22

Have you tried getting your daughter to suck a piece of ice. Holding it against the roof of her mouth can slow the nose bleed. I have a son with frequent nose bleeds, this usually does the trick. It can appear worse than it is when it’s lots of tissues or just constant dripping/running from nose.

BeNavyCrab · 22/10/2024 02:23

You might get seen quicker at an urgent care centre if there's one near you. Try to remain calm and keep your daughter as calm as possible, so her blood pressure doesn't rise. It's distressing to see and can be quite a lot of blood but in most cases nosebleeds aren't serious. Keep trying to get it to stop with pressure and hopefully 111 will get back to you with the quickest option for treatment for her.

Zapx · 22/10/2024 02:27

Try and block the nose with tissue then get her to count to 60 slowly. Really you want to calm her heart rate down. That would normally start a clot forming (getting them all the time runs in the family), then rinse and repeat only removing the tissue when she gets to 60. Stop this immediately if blood is going into her mouth. If that doesn’t work I don’t think it’s unreasonable to go to a and e. Really hope it stops soon

Frozensun · 22/10/2024 02:29

It always looks more than it is, BUT if you’re worried take her to A&E/urgent care. Use a damp facecloth to pinch her nose (just below where the hard bit is) and don’t take the pressure off. Don’t keep looking to see if it’s stopped - that will make it bleed again. Some of the tissues look like there’s clot in the tissue.

thesilver · 22/10/2024 02:31

I would drive go to a&e due to her age and length of time of bleeding. Good luck

'whenemmafallsinlove', call an ambulance? For a NOSE BLEED? No wonder the NHS is in such a mess! For a nose bleed you either drive there yourself, get a neighbour or parent to help, or call a taxi. Ambulances are for life threatening emergencies, NOT nose bleeds, however bad they may seem!

thesilver · 22/10/2024 02:32

Sorry that was supposed to say *definitely

A nose bleed 'epistaxis' can be life threatening.

Ah yes, the photo definitely shows a life threatening amount of blood loss.

No wonder ambulance wait times are what they are.

VickyMcVities · 22/10/2024 02:36

Take a sick bowl. I had this and started vomiting the blood back up after about 45 mins. I didn't even think I had swallowed any either but it was pretty horrific!! Good luck!

EighteenOhFive · 22/10/2024 02:36

As well as pinching the soft part of the nose, apply pressure to the lower part, the skin between the nostrils. There's blood vessels that enter the nose there as well. Keeps the tissue in place as long as possible, don't keep removing it you'd be hindering it from clotting.

Nose bleeds can become life threatening if too much blood is lost.
Bear in mind this is a 7 year old child we are talking about not an adult so smaller losses could still be serious.

littlenickyy61 · 22/10/2024 02:52

If you are still at home get her to lie on sofa head raised ( but not sat bolt upright ) get her to raise her left arm in a straight up position like she’s pointing to the ceiling then get her to make a tight fist with her left hand and squeeze the fist tightly. I thought my mother in law was mad when she got my daughter to this when she had a bad nosebleed but it works everytime . Hope your daughter’s ok . Some people swear by a tampon up each nostril but can’t vouch for this as never tried it before

Normallynumb · 22/10/2024 02:54

Yes I would take her
She may end up needing a blood vessel cauterised
Take a bowl or something with you, if she has swallowed any blood, she may vomit
