To think that having kids is selfish in today’s world?

With the planet facing overpopulation, climate change, and dwindling resources, isn’t it selfish to keep having kids? AIBU to think that choosing to have children now is more about personal desires than about what’s best for the world?

Who will look after your kids when they get older?
I presume they won't be having kids, so who will pay their pensions, and contribute to the working world if they are the last generation?

Ooh don't ask me hard questions! I'm just being a bit sarky on MN to amuse myself. My kids already have kids and very happy I am for them, and everyone else who has them, or chooses not to.

@SoftLittleBunnyRabbit one of the most depressing things about Covid was realising how stupid much of the population is. My favourites were the “Im jogging in the park and it’s packed, don’t people realise we are in lockdown” or the responses to parents fretting about juggling home schooling & work, “You shouldn’t have had dc if you didn’t want to look after them” 🤦‍♀️

They were out on full force for sure 🤦‍♀️ it's both unbelievable and hilarious in equal measures to look back on.

Well yes women give birth but it takes two to tango.

The woman's sacrifice is far greater than the man's however.

That's why, in countries like Japan or South Korea, where women are educated but still have to put up with archaic male attitudes, birthrates are plummeting.

If you want to increase the birthrate, you have to make it attractive for women.

OhMaria2 · 21/10/2024 19:25

Or.... Children are a valuable asset. They should pay us loads to have them.

Oh yes, the whole 'idiots flocking to beaches' thing. Not realising that you are one of those 'idiots' doing the 'flocking'.

MonsieurBlobby · 21/10/2024 19:26

Taking all the emotion out of it, the best solution would be that everyone opts to die at, say, 75. But it's a hard policy to sell.

(Tongue is firmly in cheek, but...)

whereaw · 21/10/2024 19:28

What does 'best for the world' mean? Agree it's more about aging populations than growing birth rates. So I think the selfish thing (if you want to call it that) would be our own continued existence.

🤣🤣🤣 indeed.

A good old case of do what I say and not what I do.

Yes agree and everyone should have loads more kids...I have 6

Hellskitchen24 · 21/10/2024 19:30

Any decision to have a child is selfish. I’m currently pregnant. Hopefully my child will become a productive, valued member of society.

People in the western world are not having enough children. It’s a massive problem for a lot of countries; an aging population and low birth rate!

Pennysfarthing · 21/10/2024 19:31

Although it's wasn't a sacrifice to me

Fieldofmush · 21/10/2024 19:44

@IcedPurple 😆

Fieldofmush · 21/10/2024 19:49

@Healingsfall nope, whether you are talking about 50 yrs ago or 100 yrs ago you are talking nonsense…

Fieldofmush · 21/10/2024 19:52

I’m just going to leave your brilliant, insightful contribution here

“The point is, the more kids people have now the more selfish because so much more is expected and it costs the state so much, unlike throughout history.”

😆😆😆

So no one has children and the human race ends?

ChequerToRed · 21/10/2024 19:55

I only had one. He’s currently doing a Masters in biochemistry, so you can thank him later.

No more selfish than in was during wartime or if you live in a warzone. It’s basic human nature and important that we keep going.

Why is it so important?

Homo sapiens has been a massively destructive species. The planet would be much better off without us.

FiddlyDiddlyDee · 21/10/2024 20:02

WoahThreeAces · 21/10/2024 17:52

Nah we need to keep making more people to do all the jobs that existing people will eventually stop doing and retire.

Nah that's a capitalist myth and the reason your life is similar to a battery farm chicken. Most things don't need to be done by a human these days and when it comes to basic needs we don't need that many of them. Won't even need drivers soon.

Most people on here don't do anything for work that's a necessity to other humans, it's just about more $ and more toys for a handful of people. Peoples quality of life would massively improve if the population decreases significantly.

Grepes · 21/10/2024 20:03

Aren’t most people selfish? I really wanted a pet so I got one. I wanted to live in London (very overpopulated), so I did. I want to go on holiday, so I did. All these things mostly benefit me. Having my child was completely selfish, I doubt anyone thinks, ‘oh I will have a child so they can provide end of life care for the elderly population’. But, so what? Most people are selfish and make decisions accordingly.

I don’t think your statement is as controversial as you want it to be.

Oh yeah, it's well aware of that and probably will do as such.
