Hi everyone

I'm beginning to worry about DD who's 17 months.

The last 2 months she has started sleeping 15 hours a night and also screams for more "juice" (water) as soon as her bottle is empty. She's getting through 8/9 of her bottles a day. She cries for more. She goes to bed at 7 and is soaked through no matter what we try when she wakes. Sometimes I will put a clean nappy on her to go out and by the time we've done a 30 minute drive for example she's wet through when we arrive.

She's also small even though she eats well, 3 meals a day and snacks (for example a typical day could be porridge and a slice of toast for breakfast, apple for a snack, omelette for lunch with some toddler crisps and grapes, banana or mini bag of toddler animal biscuits then salmon, vegetable rice and extra veg for dinner).

She's still in 9-12m bottoms and doesn't seem to grow/put weight on very quickly. We don't have any health visitors here after they are 3 months. She's never had a 12 month check or anything else that I see Mum's talk about on here.

She isn't behind in development, says around 30 words, can count to 10 with encouragement, walked at a year, she's loving and happy, very smiley and likes to play independently as well as with other children/me and DH.

I've booked an appt with drs for next week but just wondering if any of the symptoms are familiar to people who have children with diabetes.

Thank you!

I'd get her seen today. My daughter has type 1, had all those symptoms and was rushed to intensive care where diagnosed, with very high ketones and in dka. It's common for newly diagnosed type 1's to be in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be fatal).
I don't want to scare you, but next week is too late to wait. Go today and make sure they do a finger prick test.

She needs to be seen urgently - as in, today.

Take her to an and e, now.

Another vote for a&e. That amount of continuous drinking needs checking. Fingers crossed its nothing but please go just in case.

Agree with all.of the above. DKA is life-threatening. Take care x

Atishooo · 21/10/2024 09:32

Drinking excessively and wetting were signs for my type 1. Fortunately I spotted it before he went into DKA.

elm26 · 21/10/2024 09:36

Oh my goodness, thank you everyone.

Going to get dressed and take her to A&E.

Dramatic · 21/10/2024 16:46

Hope everything is ok with your DD, definitely sounds like she needed to be seen as they are all signs of diabetes

This ,my son was 16 when diagnosed but also in DKA ,it can be life threatening,
The good news is Diabetes is very treatable these days .

So sorry forgot to update! They did a blood glucose test and all is well. They said that some toddlers just drink more than others and she obviously likes her sleep.

They have referred me on for the lack of weight gain though.

The Dr was lovely and said they'd rather see a child and say all is well than see a child whose parents have delayed getting them checked and then urgent treatment is needed.

Thanks all.
