I had a pelvis ultrasound on Friday ( for my ovaries as I had some strong period pains in middle of August but my period actually stopped in March, so no bleeding since March - aged 50 years old.
The ultrasound was both internal and external.
The external was really quickly done in like few mins and the inside one was a bit longer maybe 5 mins.
Anyway the radiologist told me when she finished that nothing concerning was found and all seems ok.
I especially asked about cysts and she said no cysts.
Today I got my results on my NhS app and it says that one of the ovary contains small simple cyst .
I'm now confused why she didn’t mention this especially when I asked about it.

Radiologists aren’t allowed to discuss anything. The results get looked at and reported by more senior staff.

Confuseddotco · 21/10/2024 08:36

@BabyCloud that’s not what happened. She said straightaway the result to me. I didn’t even expect that but I was so relieved when she actually said it.
Now I’m worried actually..

No one can answer this for you apart from the sonographer. I would interpret this that the cyst is very small. When I had a pelvic ultrasound a couple of months ago the appointment letter specifically stated the sonographer would not comment on what was seen or give me any information during the appointment. But she did! I think to reassure me as I'd ended up in A&E in agony a couple of weeks before.

@NigelHarmansNewWife I don’t know what small means as it measures this

ovary contains a 13.7 x 9.5 x
7.5mm simple cyst.
No collections seen.
No follow up.

I have no pains at all. It was one off in the August.

I also thought that you can’t get cysts if no periods as no ovulation happens.

You don't know how long the cyst has been there? This is a conversation to have with your GP I think.

Confuseddotco · 21/10/2024 08:56

I had private gyno scan in end of August and it was all clear..

You don't know your periods have finished though. You only reach menopause when you have been period-free for a year. I twice had gaps of 9 months before finally exceeding the year benchmark.

HappyTwo · 21/10/2024 09:19

I think scans get double checked it was likely picked up on that. No need to worry.

Confuseddotco · 21/10/2024 09:30

@Seeline oh yeah, I know it has to full 12 month with no any period to reach Menopause but the private gyno Dr I saw in end of August mentioned that there is nothing in my womb to create/ shed any bleeding in the future, he said unlikely I would get any period any time soon or ever, also had no cysts anything.
Unless the nhs radiologist thought the cyst in non significant, but I think I still should be told about it especially when I mentioned it.
I got nobody to really call as it says no follow up needed.
It’s totally impossible to reach my GP as all contact with GP was sewered and all is to do is to fill an online form only and they will decide if I need to be seen or contacted.
I tried this with something else and got phone appointment in 9 weeks.

When I had oopherectomy the pathology report came back with 3 different types of cysts. All benign. Ovarian cysts are very common and a simple cyst is benign. If you Google it there is lots of information.

Confuseddotco · 21/10/2024 09:43

@LLresident thank you.

Did she? Or did she say, "I can't see any problem"? The radiographer does the scan, then a radiologist will report on it. They take longer to look at the recording.

As for getting cysts with no periods, I got one. Actually I got one, it burst, then it happened again and again.

ovary contains a 13.7 x 9.5 x7.5mm simple cyst. so about the size of a sugar cube or more like a teaspoon size.

Mine was the size of a grapefruit. And even then when the sonographer showed me the screen she said, "I think it is a cyst". I'm sure she knew damn well it was a cyst but had to wait for the recording to be examined.

Confuseddotco · 21/10/2024 10:51

@sashh i was lying there on the examination bed and she removed the device and said I can’t see anything concerning there, all seems to be normal.
To what I asked no cysts? and she responded no cysts.
Then I said thank you and left.
I read about ovarian cysts just now I can see they can go to really big size but I have a bit of a health anxiety so it makes me a bit worried.

It’s just if she would say something like :
there is a small cyst but nothing to be worried about, these can come and go- it may be better so I would be aware but again with my health anxiety it might would lead to the same worries..

She isn't qualified to give you the 'results'. She can say what she thinks she saw and didn't see, but she shouldn't really have even done that. It gets looked at by a senior radiologist and a consultant in the field of reproductive medicine.

The only time they can meaningfully tell you the results of any test like that on the spot is with a DEMSA bone scan. As it's just a reading on a screen.

sashh · 22/10/2024 01:49

@Confuseddotco So she gave you her opinion, then someone else looked at it and they could see a small cyst.

This is why we have this system.

I'm sorry about your health anxiety. Please try not to worry, a small cyst causing no problems isn't something to worry about. Our bodies are really amazing.
