Would this annoy you?

Was out with my son for dinner , went to the bar to order his meal , I wasn’t hungary , so was just ordering for him. At the bar I ordered a kids fish and chip , and the server asked - do you have a kid with you? I was abit taken back - and said yes and pointed to where he was sitting . This really annoyed me and I almost want to complain, or was the server right and I should just forget about it!

Some people try to order kids' meals for adults to save money. Places don't like you doing that for obvious reasons. So I think it's understandable.

Fan of Ricky Gervais I see.

lap90 · 20/10/2024 20:02

I don't see the issue.

WhatsInTheRug · 20/10/2024 20:02

Wouldn't annoy me at all

They are just doing their job!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 20/10/2024 20:02

As @PullTheBricksDown said.

Also children's meals are often discounted to try and gain custom because then they'll sell adult meals, meaning if you just order a kids meal they'll probably be losing money.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 20/10/2024 20:02

What would you be complaining about?

Carnationstreet7 · 20/10/2024 20:02

Non issue

Sunshineclouds11 · 20/10/2024 20:03

Wouldn't annoy me

Procrastinates · 20/10/2024 20:04

I read your post twice as I thought I'd missed some key detail. I genuinely can't see why you're annoyed or what your complaint would be. Hmm

peachesarenom · 20/10/2024 20:04

I think kids meals are VAT free so they're cheaper, they might get into tax issues if adults are them regularly

Sethera · 20/10/2024 20:04

Against the grain - I don't think they should check if it's being eaten by a child. If an adult wants a small meal, they should be able to buy one.

CoffeeAndATwix · 20/10/2024 20:07

Not sure why you'd b annoyed?!

(Mum used to always order a kids meal for herself as she couldn't eat full portions. She usually expected to be asked 'is this for a child' and then to have to explain she has the appetite of a fly and would it b ok if this is all she has!

I sometimes cheekily order a kids meal if my kids are with me because my appetite is smaller than theirs! They will eat from the adult menu and I'll have the free kids meal!)

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 20:11

If restaurants don't want people ordering "kids food" for adults to eat then they should put fish fingers and chips on the adult menu 😁
The fancy pub I go to for an event once a month does a fish finger sandwich.
Fish Fingers are the best.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/10/2024 20:15

Children's clothing is zero rated, most food (Supermarket to eat at home) is zero rated.
Restaurant meals, drinks and takeaways are standard rated, regardless of whether they are for a child or an adult.

and i don't think it's unreasonable to ask if a child meal is for an actual child.

It's not a small meal....many menus have those anyway....it was a KIDS meal

There's a difference

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/10/2024 20:15

Would you rather restaurants served child priced meals to adults and pay their staff even less to get by and eventually close their doors? Because that's what would happen if they didn't insist only children order children's meals. Would you also be annoyed if they asked a 16 yr old for ID before serving beer?

OverthinkingOlive · 20/10/2024 20:17

Did you scrape the fish fingers off the plate and shove them all in your gob at once?

SpiggingBelgium · 20/10/2024 20:18

I’m struggling to see the problem. He asked if you had a child with you, you pointed out your child - The End.

SunshineAndFizz · 20/10/2024 20:22

Oh give over.

LOliver123 · 20/10/2024 20:25

Yeah I guess I didn’t like the implication that I was trying to order a kids meal for myself . Then I thought - what if I did , bit much having to prove the child for the kids meal. It’s a large chain hotel . But yes - not worth getting annoyed about!

It's similar to going to pay for your petrol after filling up your car and getting annoyed when they ask you which pump. It's just a question, a relevant question which the member of staff have probably been instructed to ask (they don't really give a shit personally), with an easy uncomplicated answer.

I'm not sure what's going on elsewhere for you that this is even a thing.

“Because they’re smaller. “😆

I’m not sure this true, DM has eggs and chips which isn’t even on the menu and cheaper again than a children’s meal but huge!
