To ask - WHAT is this stain??

Bit of a clickbaity title, don't get excited you smutty lot.

Posted on DIY but didn't get much uptake.

The last 4 days this white discolouration randomly appeared on our kitchen worktop.

I can't get it off for love nor money!

Bicarb, lemon juice, elbow grease spray left on overnight. It dissappears when it's wet but gradually comes back as it dries 😫

Any ideas?? I rent and moving out in December so really need it gone!

What material is it? Granite?

itslikecakesbutitsnotcakes · 20/10/2024 19:12

Looks like a hot pan has heated up the melamine top and damaged it.

Davros · 20/10/2024 19:13

I was ready to say spunk and I'm not sure I'm wrong

Scampuss · 20/10/2024 19:14

I think you might have over-done the cleaning and ruined the finish. How does it look if you rub some oil (a scant amount!) into it?

I agree with you.

Sweetaschocolate · 20/10/2024 19:17

Yep deffo had something hot on it, I know because I've done it myself.

Bignanna · 20/10/2024 19:18

OP- who’s going to own up to damaging it?

Any ideas how to get rid of it??

Sorry posted too soon and can't edit!

Mine looked like this after I cleaned the metal bits on top of the hob there, I used the cif cream cleaner. I thought the stain wouldn't come off and didn't really do anything to it and it has slowly gone away wiping it down with washing up liquid and hot water each night. It's been about a week now and looks pretty much like it did before. It was quite a worn work top already.

granite or quarz?

we have dark quarz and it's very sensitive to acidity. even leaving apple peel on it leaves discolouration like that.

Nope sorry OP, having a new worktop fitted soon so will not be making the same mistake again 😅.

itslikecakesbutitsnotcakes · 20/10/2024 20:02

It also looks very scratched up. The top sealant has probably been compromised. You could try putting a heavy wax or oil on it and leaving it overnight. If it doesnt fix the problem it may at least mask it temporarily when you move out.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/10/2024 20:05

I was going to suggest overzealous use of cream cleanser - that scratches like chickenpox.

Agree that oiling or waxing it should cover it up temporarily. Beeswax polish would be my go-to.

YellowphantGrey · 20/10/2024 20:07

Send it to Nancy Birtwhistle on Instagram, the womans a genius.

She can always get stains out

It's definitely not quartz, it's just your bog standard worktop material if that makes sense?

@itslikecakesbutitsnotcakes - it's hard to capture it in photos, but that's not scratches, it's indents in whatever the white stuff is. But I'll try the wax!

Defo heat marks ive got it on mine where my Dp put down a hot saucepan

Awfeckoff · 20/10/2024 20:15

If it's heat marks, I'd say lay a tea towel over it and then run a hot iron on top. The heat from the iron brings out the vapour and the tea towel soaks it up.
In theory, of course 😂. But it has worked for me, on wood.

Will try this too. It's currently got washing up liquid on it and warm water to soak overnight as a PP recommendation so if that doesn't work I'll try the wax, then this!

Choux · 20/10/2024 20:57

So you think the white is something on top of the worktop ie a spillage?

What's the white stuff on the toaster? Could that be the same spillage? Looks like paint? Has anyone been decorating?

If it's next to the hob do you put hot things down on it? Have you left and cleaning products or things with cleaning products there recently? Or any foodstuffs?

Bignanna · 20/10/2024 21:05

OP- could you ask a manufacturer of this sort of surface to suggest the cause and something to put this right ?
