To wonder if ‘body positivity’ has gone too far?

While I fully accept supporting everyone for who they are, sometimes I feel like the body positivity movement is promoting unhealthy lifestyles. AIBU to feel like there should be limits?

It’s hard to tell OP. Gone too far in what way? What limits do you have in mind?

Are we talking about limiting the size range of clothes people can buy? Banning fat people from appearing on the telly? What exactly?

I’m definitely not suggesting banning anyone from visibility or limiting clothing sizes. I’m more concerned about the promotion of unhealthy habits under the guise of body positivity. For instance, I’ve seen influencers on social media who seem to downplay the health risks associated with extreme obesity. I think it’s important to strike a balance between accepting all body types and still encouraging healthy lifestyles. What do you think?

I think I’m not on social media so don’t give a hoot about the opinion of someone I don’t know on it.

Allfur · 19/10/2024 10:49

I never see this stuff, maybe time to get off tiktok

bryceQ · 19/10/2024 10:53

Is there anyone obese who promotes body positivity over the age of 45/50?

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 10:53

Yes social media is full of clean eating & over exercising etc it’s Orthorexia.

Seems like you care enough to comment here though 😉.

Even Lizzo realises that being obese isn't attractive or healthy and is losing weight

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 10:54

Oh do you just mean fat people and not very slim people?

Yeah.

Working out and eating healthily isn't unhealthy

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 10:55

Well have the fat positive people influenced you to gain weight?

I’m not even on TikTok, so maybe it’s time to stop making assumptions 😊.

Literally nobody has ever said this before.

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 10:56

@gonnabeteoubleemma I said orthorexia which is different to healthy eating…

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 19/10/2024 10:59

I think we can have a balance. I am reasonably fit but have curves as I would have to get to a very low body fat to not have hips/boobs it's where I store any fat.

In some way saying it as acceptable to be bigger helps with mental health at the expense of physical health so I don't think it has gone to far

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 10:54

I mean all body types, including both extremes. The conversation is about whether promoting body positivity sometimes overlooks health considerations, regardless of whether someone is very slim or overweight.

I think there’s a fine line between healthy representation and unhealthy positivity.

Cremacreme · 19/10/2024 11:02

I don’t anyone is under the illusion that being too big or small is healthy for you long term though?

And pp is right that mental health also comes into play.

Body positivity also promotes that it’s ok to nip tuck, tweaks, it’s free choice etc but I don’t think that’s healthy.

Mrsttcno1 · 19/10/2024 11:05

I agree with you OP. There’s a lot of glamourising being obese under the guise of “body positivity”, yes it’s a good thing to love your body, but it’s naive and harmful to pretend that being morbidly obese doesn’t come with health risks. Those health risks don’t disappear by loving your size.

There’s equally the same for the other end of the spectrum, glamourising massively under eating and over exercising to maintain that “perfect” body. One particular quite famous influencers (who have a large young female following) posting videos describing how she had eaten a lot the day before so she was having a “punished day” doing 2 hours of cardio and essentially eating nothing.

Completely agree. There are people promoting morbid obesity minimising or denying the associated health risks which is just dangerous misinformation. Did you watch BBC Around the World in 80 Weighs? The one woman was completely into promoting healthy at huge sizes and if you called her out on it you were size-ist.

Happykitchen · 19/10/2024 11:10

I think this is yet another fat bashing thread.

jabbaf · 19/10/2024 11:12

yes I agree. I've seen a few clothes adverts recently with extremely morbidly obese people in them. The sort of weight problem which often results in death before 30.

Itsmychristmasdress · 19/10/2024 11:13

Do you mean people like.Lizzo?
Because people always get this mixed up.
She was always eating vegan and clean and you have to excercise hard to have her stamina on stage as a bigger woman.
She has always talked about loving yourself regardless of size. She loved herself just as much when she was bigger because her ability to be loved as a human is not about her clothes size.
So many commentators stating that Lizzo has done a u turn, she hasn't she is just losing weight(probably from weight loss jabs) which re enforces that her genetics are at play when it comes to her weight.
I cannot see anybody saying anywhere. Eat until you are morbidly obese, your value as a person is determined by you getting fatter.
It's just people saying. I am fat but I am still a beautiful person.
