To not want to pay playschool £5 because I have to work?

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:41

My employer has changed my work hours, I used to work 6am til 9am. I now have to work 7am til 11am when ds is at playschool or basically lose my job.
Now I am unable to be a parent helper at playschool and have to pay them £5 when I am on the rota. Am i being unreasonable to not want to pay it?

YABU

it is not the playschool's fault

Youcannotbeserious · 24/04/2008 09:42

Can you not have the extra charge covered by your employers?

Especially as you will be working an extra hour?

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:42

How is it my fault? Should I give up work?

YABU

Other people have to work too. If the agreement is that you are there or you pay a penalty, and you are not there, then you pay the penalty.

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:43

No my employer would not pay. I used to do 3 mornings a week, now I do 2 mornings with these new hours.

It's your job, and the playschool is, I am assumng, a co-operative.

If you're not there, someone else has to be there. Someone else who therefore cannot be at work.

It's not YOUR fault, but it's not THEIR fault either.

emkana · 24/04/2008 09:45

If you choose to send your child to playschool then it's the deal that you have to do rota or pay a fine, that's just how it works.

SlartyBartFast · 24/04/2008 09:45

does everyone have to help then?
presumably it cuts down costs whichis why you have to pay a fiver.
a fiver a week or a one off?

emkana · 24/04/2008 09:45

If you do 2 mornings there are 3 other mornings in the week when you could do rota aren't there?

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:46

He only goes 2 mornings a week and I need to work then. I have no family to help with babysitting or helping out. My only option is to work when he is at playschool.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 24/04/2008 09:47

I assume you agreed to the Playschool's terms and conditions when you signed up? YABU.

SmugColditz · 24/04/2008 09:47

Then you have to pay the fiver. You can't send him for free without contributing. The world does not work like that.

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:48

Their ploicy is that every parent/guardian has to take a turn to be a helper for at least twice each term.

£5 for childcare when you are working is incredibly cheap, so YABU, i'm afraid. even a CM would be £3 per hour at least. so £5 for him to be looked after is very good value.

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:48

When I signed him up to playschool I wasn't aware of the £5 rule or the fact that I had to be a helper.

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 24/04/2008 09:49

Is the £5 all you would have to pay for your childcare then? Sounds pretty reasonable to me!

cupsoftea · 24/04/2008 09:49

surely you'll earn more with the extra hour?

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:50

But my son's playschool is funded by the Government as he is 3.

OP posts:
SmugColditz · 24/04/2008 09:50

Did you sign anything to the effect that you have to turn up or pay up?

Have you spoken to them about this, as they may be applying a blanket rule to prevent lazy people bogging off into town when it's their turn, and may not realise you have to work.

emkana · 24/04/2008 09:51

You'll only have to pay £10 a term then! Hardly the end of the world!!!

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/04/2008 09:51

I won't be working an extra hour,
I work 8 hours on a Sunday and 8 hours in the week.
I used to do 7 hours on a sunday and 3 mornings in the week 6-9 - Same money!

OP posts:
SmugColditz · 24/04/2008 09:51

Is it an OFSTED registered playschool then? Because I think they have to provide their own staff, as they are paid to do so.

tell us a bit more about the way the playschool runs

Bramshott · 24/04/2008 09:52

I think someone has already said this, but if you don't work on 3 mornings, can't you do your playgroup session then?

I think you've got off fairly lightly, but it might be worth checking whether your employer is allowed to change your hours like that if 3 mornings 6-9 is in your contract?

cupsoftea · 24/04/2008 09:52

If you work then you should pay - what about the sahm mums who pay if they can't help (perhaps they have other kids to look after?)

flowerybeanbag · 24/04/2008 09:52

£10 a term? I was assuming it was a day or a week! YABU!
