I don’t think I should pay?

I went to Canada over the summer. Hurt myself in one of the activities I participated in. Went to the local hospital in the afternoon, they did an xray, I paid before the treatment (hundred of pounds) and left in the evening. No follow up or anything additional to do at the hospital. Yesterday they charged my card randomly for another £60. No warning/email nothing. I contacted them and they told me that they could because I signed this.
I am furious because a) they shouldn’t have done that without contacting me b) they charged me at the time c) surely 4 months are a long time to not get in touch with someone who paid in person?

Funnily enough they say that the additional charge is specifically for what I went for, the xray:

‘Here you go, below is your credit card authorization signed by you, reason why we move forward in charging your card on file.
Moreover, you may continue to file a charge back to your bank, then we will just mail your outstanding bill to your mailbox, if you want to file a charge back.
Lastly, during your visits, you only paid for the ER room + ER doctor’s fee. No payment made for Xray. As part of the Non-Resident of Canada agree you signed for, you are responsible for any additional charges.
On your case, you had Xray that causes you to have a balance owing of X CAD reason why we charge you.

wwyd?

I don’t think I should pay?

You haven't paid for one element of the treatment you had and now they have charged you for it. Annoying it came through unexpectedly but you owe it and as you are abroad they had no means presumably of chasing you for it.

Overthebow · 18/10/2024 19:18

If you didn’t pay for the x ray then you will need to pay now. Can’t you use your travel insurance though?

Cityandmakeup · 18/10/2024 19:23

Insurance,

Ilovecashews · 18/10/2024 19:26

Yes I can but what if they come back in five months and tell me that I owe them another £200? Surely this should be settled within a certain timeframe? (Which of course I don’t expect you to know?)

Did you get an itemised bill at the time?

MoneyAndPercentages · 18/10/2024 19:34

I think this is normal in the US/Canada if you're paying independently. If you're concerned they may charge you for something else, email them and confirm this will be the last payment.

NoSquirrels · 18/10/2024 19:38

Ask for an itemised bill/your account and confirm it is all settled.

VioletCrawleyForever · 18/10/2024 19:39

Contact your insurance to raise a claim.

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/10/2024 19:39

I think you need to confirm it is now all settled. I don’t think it is particularly unusual to receive a bill several months later.

MrsKwazi · 18/10/2024 19:41

You need to pay and claim back from your travel insurance.

Did you have travel ins for the trip?

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/10/2024 19:42

What treatment did they do once they’d done the x ray? Were there other diagnostic tests other than the xray? That might give you a clue whether there are more medical bills to come.

Er, they are very different countries with very different healthcare systems

JC03745 · 18/10/2024 19:46

Why aren't you contacting your travel insurance company?

Sethera · 18/10/2024 19:49

Oooh, I tremble.

Ilovecashews · 18/10/2024 19:51

well, I was cleaning the drawer a couple of weeks ago, found the paperwork and thought ‘what could I possibly need this for?’ so chucked it away.
i don’t know if it’s common, what really grate is that they didn’t even send me an email to tell me, it’s like shut up and let us take money from your account. Wtf.
i have insurance, I can go back to them, but this behaviour is really pissing me off.

@Pinkissmart and yet unfortunately I've experienced this in both countries! Clearly I need to be more careful and stop getting injured abroad 😂

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/10/2024 19:54

From a non resident point of view they may be quite similar systems. Absolutely miles apart for residents of US/Canada.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 18/10/2024 20:08

I mean I guess I understand about being annoyed but you incurred the charges, you already authorized them to charge the card on file, there was no reason for them to contact you.

Why would they?

Nightowl1234 · 18/10/2024 20:16

What a non-issue.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 18/10/2024 20:16

Of course you should pay. Some MN threads are baffling.

TowerRavenSeven · 18/10/2024 20:22

Yabu because you owe them the money. Four months is nothing!! I’ve gotten bills Years after I had ds as they caught a charge they hadn’t charged us for. We had to pay it. I agree it’s ridiculous, but it’s the way it is.

Ilovecashews · 21/10/2024 19:44

Well, I’ve asked them to state where I signed that they could take money out of my account whenever it suited them and they’ve disappeared 🤷🏻‍♀️
