Are Smaller Companies Better to Work for? I've Become so Angry working in this Large Organisation.

I've worked for a large bank/finance company for almost 29 yrs. Have mostly enjoyed it. But in recent years they have tried so hard to get with the times that it's gone overboard.
They celebrate everything and do everything in their power to make us celebrate with them whether we believe in it or not. And if we don't, well, you guessed it, we get pulled up on it for not sharing the banks values.
It's not just the company, it's the world in general. I've become an angry person and I want to get off.

I don't want to get into an argument about me being a dinosaur. I just want to go to work and do my work. I don't want to celebrate or be constantly reminded about every religious festival, pronoun day etc.

I still need to work.

Would a smaller company be more inclined to leave their employees to have their own political views and allow them to just get on with work.
It's a massive decision. But I'm so miserable and frustrated when I am. But it's all I've known.
Any advice is appreciated

And what about the virtual white boards where we have to say
What went well
What didn't go so well
What have we learnt
What actions can we take
All from the last 2 weeks

I've found myself having a power cut or some other random emergency to get out of these because my mind goes blank. Absolutely pointless meets

You have to participate in a virtual whiteboard for black history month?

I understand if it's not your thing but you feeling 'rage' over it should be explored. It seem like it stems from hate

I worked for a small company and it was the worse thing I ever did. Crap pay. Rude "managers '. Wanted to argue my values. Really intrusive with my home life. Not ever again.

I work for a large company now and just delete any stupid emails and keep my head low so when I don't attend these events they don't notice 😁

I worked for large multi national companies for over a decade. I got disillusioned and decided to move right to the opposite end of the pool, to a 25 person business.

Im now looking to go back to a large business.

Top issues for me at the smaller business:

Family employees shit at their jobs and overpaid but untouchable

Limited cash flow so innovation is stifled and investing in new tech or resource is impossible

No HR really. It’s outsourced and bare minimum in terms of policies/entitlements

No support or teams to collaborate with. Feel very isolated in my role whereas before I had 10-20 close colleagues who’d all support each other on projects

Lack of clear future path. In corporate I could see the path ahead.

Slow to change to meet new legislation etc (very relevant in my industry). Feeling like lack of cash means no time available to spend on proper mandatory training. Feeling very exposed.

@Horrace it clearly would benefit you and your family to seek help for your anger. It's not normal.

You may also want to do a self referral to PREVENT so this doesn't escalate

@workinworkingmumguilt
These are all good points.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I have a lot to think about. Will get some financial advice too. But more importantly, I need to calm the fuck down and try not to let the lunatics get to me.

Does your organisation offer sabbaticals? Once of my previous companies did. If you could afford it, maybe some extended leave would help clear the mind?

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/10/2024 15:36

How does anyone get any work done with all this? Most of the time these things are superficial a tick box exercise for show. Just treat people fairly, pay them well and let them get on with their jobs. Also agree OP that peri/ menopause lowers your BS threshold which is difficult but as others have said just try to ignore it all and get on with your day. Perhaps suggest they do something to celebrate the menopause, like sending you to a nice spa retreat 😂

Just lolling at your capital letters

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/10/2024 20:48

I'd stay with the big company. You'll be even angrier in a smaller company with a smaller pay packet!

Just ignore! You don't have to join in. Head down. Do your work. Collect the pay and enjoy their pension contributions.

I work in an association with about 15 employees. It's not perfect but I definitely enjoy it more than the corporate crap you get with larger entitties.

LlynTegid · 19/10/2024 21:08

Where I think the OP has a valid point is that often alongside all the various examples, many of which are things we should be concerned about, is that they are trying to put out a message of 'we are caring'.

When in many ways, the opposite is true. Basic caring things of being able to finish work on time, not having to deal with pointless or unduly complicated bureaucracy, and having managers with people skills, all don't happen in many of those companies who do a lot of the examples given.

Or they treat customers badly. I bet there are charities Ryanair support, for example.

Giraff3 · 19/10/2024 21:15

ive worked for both

Id now always choose the larger org.

Smaller companies i have worked for their family members are being hired or promoted and its frustrating. People also know each others business.
