Wth is with charity shops no longer having changing rooms?!?

For the 4th time within the last month I have spent time browsing through a charity shops clothes rails, picked out a bunch of stuff to try on (dresses - can't try over clothes on shop floor) only to be told they have no changing room so I have wasted my time because I'm not trying without blinking buying.

Wth?!? Minor annoyance and yet so annoying. And I won't be bothering with any of them again. I've been to others who do have changing rooms and have bought stuff from them. Sigh.

This started during Covid and a lot of the shops never reopened them. You can get a refund but it's a big hassle having to buy it and try it on at home. It's definitely stopped me buying as much stuff!

Which is never a bad thing.

yeaitsmeagain · 18/10/2024 13:04

I would never try on any charity shop clothes without putting them in the wash first. I don't want to get scabies.

Needmorelego · 18/10/2024 13:11

Unfortunately too many people are thieves and/or disgusting.
Blame them. Not the shops.

Just donate them back to the charity if they don't fit?

Maybe OP can't afford that?

Our charity shops do full refunds as long as their tag is still attached via the Kimble.

Crazykefir · 18/10/2024 13:16

It's annoying. There is lots of theft.

VanCleefArpels · 18/10/2024 13:16

We give refunds in the charity shop I volunteer in - we do have a changing room but people do nick things

I don't think I've ever known a charity shop with changing rooms.

Tesco and ASDA don't have them either.

Because of shoplifting and having to staff them and probably to prevent gender issues and bad publicity. Can't say I blame them .

Yep, all the shops round here use the changing room as an overfill for donated stock, there are always piles of bags in them

comedycentral · 18/10/2024 13:24

None of the charity shops at my local shopping centre have them, in fact out of a range of clothes shops in the same centre, the only one with a changing room is peacocks.

OriginalUsername2 · 18/10/2024 13:27

I wouldn’t try anything on in a charity shop. It needs a good long wash first. They only steam them.

BlackOrangeFrog · 18/10/2024 12:08

Probably losing less through reduced sales, than the theft that came from having the changing room.

Plus the public are utterly disgusting, no doubt they leave all sorts in changing rooms.

I was going to say this. I don't know a single person who has worked in retail who doesn't have a "customer left shit/tampon/spunk/other body fluid of your choice" in the changing room story, and you only have to read any retail/customer thread on here to see the same. It's bad enough to expect paid staff to have to clean that up, lots of staff in charity shops are volunteers, so completely understandable they wouldn't want to be bothered with that.

As long as they accept refunds I can appreciate its a bit annoying but sadly understandable.

Gazelda · 18/10/2024 13:35

People abuse changing rooms.

They reduce the space available for displaying goods.

We offer refunds.

Britpopbaby · 18/10/2024 18:48

Sometimes they use the changing rooms for holding stock is something I have noticed. One charity shop I have been in has security tags on the clothes.

Petrine · 18/10/2024 19:00

The charity shops near me have them but I always buy and take home to try on.

TheWholeShackShimmies · 18/10/2024 19:05

My sister was a manager at a Salvation Army charity shop. They had to get rid of the changing room because so many people were using it to steal or take drugs. One dirty bastard even used it as a toilet!

Some people buy from charity shops because they can't afford to just give them away if they don't fit.

GandTtwice · 18/10/2024 12:11

But Tesco and Asda would refund if the clothes don't fit - I don't think this would happen in all charity shops. Not everyone can afford to lose the money they've spent.

I work for a charity and we have retail shops and we categorically will refund you if you have a receipt. And not all our shops have changing rooms as some as very small as we have to prioritise space for stock. We are a fundraising organisation. If we don’t raise funds, we don’t pay for vital care. So it all counts!

Arghggggggh · 19/10/2024 09:31

I do understand all the reasons but I will continue to find it annoying.

One thing I like to do is browse charity shops in places I visit - where I can't try at home and return because it's too far.

I will consider the tip of buying - trying in another shops change room - and then returning, though I'll feel horribly guilty if I ever do this as it's clearly cheeky as.

Oh well.

Charity shops do refunds. Keep your receipt.

That’s what I do. It feels bad to refund stuff from a charity.

I usually donate to a different charity shop.

Then two charities benefit
