Help! I took too much Dulcolax!

Oh good lord I feel awful! I've been taking co-codamol for acute pain from an injury and have been feeling so blocked up. I took a dulcolax this morning but nothing happened. I can't actually remember if I took one last night or not but seeing as nothing had happened, I took another 2 after dinner today as thought maybe I just needed a stronger dose. And oh my gosh do I regret that! I'm now stuck on the toilet feeling like I've taken that colonoscopy prep stuff! There's nothing I can do now but wait it out is there? I'm such an idiot! I won't be doing that again!!

Don't leave the house until.youve been to.the loo.
I shat myself literally in the car after I took that stuff.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/10/2024 20:36

I would strongly recommend switching to dulcoease (docusate). It's much better as it softens the stool but doesn't cause diarrhea/farting or cramping.
I take codeine every day on prescription and that's what the doctors give me. It's been great, so much better than other laxatives.

Goatblu · 17/10/2024 20:56

Oh no! I took my first ever one last night after being bunged up for 4 days - also prescribed codeine for an injury. I'm glad I read the box and just took the one as I've 'been' 3 times so far today.......

Patienceinshortsupply · 17/10/2024 21:01

Bisacodyl is the work of the devil. Nothing you can do OP but sit and let it happen. And drink lots of water.

For future reference, use the Dulcoease, it's way more gentle. Takes a couple of days but there's no sitting on the loo thinking your colon is heading outside of your body!

VerityUnreasonble · 17/10/2024 21:54

Oh OP, sympathies. It will pass but the cramps will be horrible.

I had a bit of post surgical / post opiates panic and decided it was a good idea to neck some lactulose to be on the safe side. It was past the safe side and way back into a danger zone.

Twentybottlesofbeer · 17/10/2024 22:02

I had surgery in the summer. It took a week, 5x dulcoease, 2x dulcolax a day to make me finally go to the loo. And then it all stopped again for 4 days and I had to switch to 2x sennakot max for a week.
Then after another 3 weeks of two tablespoons of lactulose every day, I finally started to go.

I feel your pain so so badly. It's a horrible memory I'll never forget!!

Motherland2624 · 17/10/2024 22:04

I’m have to take 6 to get any movement

MagentaRocks · 17/10/2024 22:05

I find glycerin suppositories the best for me. I used to use dulcolax but had cramps etc. the suppositories are great and just help you go. Unfortunately I have always had issues with constipation.

MrsKarlUrban · 17/10/2024 22:13

Ugh you have my sympathy, the cramps and the sweats and feels like you're actually really ill. But it will feel good after and you'll feel light as a feather.

Sideorderofchips · 17/10/2024 22:21

Do. Not. Fart.

BakewellGin1 · 17/10/2024 22:34

I feel your pain... I spent the full night before my hen weekend feeling I was going to die I was in so much pain.

I stupidly grabbed them thinking they would just help things along as I suffer IBS and was on day 5 of not going.

I spent the full night between the actual toilet and lying on the bathroom floor feeling like my insides were going to explode. The pain was horrific.

The advert says ‘gentle, predictable relief when you wake…’ no, you are bolting along the landing at 4am with cramp desperate to make it onto the pan in time! That is not gentle or predictable at all!

Goatblu · 18/10/2024 18:25

Just wondering how you're doing @DulcolaxHell ?

I took one on Wednesday night, yesterday was ok but today I'm not moving far from the toilet at all. I'm very tempted to take imodium but scared of starting the whole bunged up cycle again.

Oh no sorry to hear you've had a bad reaction. I woke up at 2:30am Saturday morning and was up for around an hour and a half on the toilet. That was pretty rough going as I was so tired and just wanted to sleep but couldn't. Yesterday I went to the toilet a few times but today seems absolutely fine thankfully. Personally I'd probably try to ride it out if you can as like you say, you don't want to start the cycle again. I've stopped taking all painkillers barring paracetamol now as I'm too worried about getting bunged up. I hope things improve for you soon.

I didn’t shit for 13 days after my section and downed so much lactulose on day 11.

my poor neighbours heard my gutteral moans as I descended into a new circle of hell.

I do know what you went through, that is the most awful feeling (after my 3rd section). 😫

Glowupinprogress · 19/10/2024 22:57

Hydrate and tomorrow immediately immodium instants! Give your body a bit of time to regulate on its own first though

Goatblu · 19/10/2024 23:05

I resorted to an imodium instant after several hours of running to the bathroom every 10 minutes as I was starting to feel really weak and peculiar. I couldn't face drinking much more water as it was just coming back out.

I fear I may be back to square one but I'm not going anywhere near dulcolax.

I used to take laxido when I was on co-codamol regularly. I don't know if it's available OTC but the pharmacist may be able to suggest something similar. Or others here have mentioned dulcoease as a gentler option.

Reader's Digest perhaps?

And don't forget the Sudocrem or Drapolene for your sore bum😬

Sore bums are horrible after a bout of diarrhoea, notoriously difficult to heal and soothe. Obviously scrupulous washing after each bowel movement, but drying the area with a hairdryer set to low is magic.
It'll all settle OP.
All the best.
