Hi, im just after some opinions please because im feeling rather silly and not sure if what i did was ok, even though it felt fine at the time. I had the heels of my boots re-heeled at a little cobblers shop in our town. I picked them up today and it was £8.99. I gave the guy £10 and i said "It's fine, keep the change, thankyou very much." He was like, "Are you sure?" and looked shocked as if this had never happened before. I replied, "Yes, i was expecting it to be around £10 anyway." And i left and came home. My Dh is now taking the piss and calling me 'Rockerfeller' and asking if the bloke 'doffed his cap' and said "Thankyou very much m'am." Well now i feel stupid. Was it ok to do or would the guy in the shop have been insullted that i thought he had undervalued his work?

Was it definitely a £10 and not a £20 note?

Acsa · 17/10/2024 11:14

He valued his work at £8.99 himself so I don't think he'll have thought you undervalued it.

Your H is being a bit of a dick. This is a non event. You did a reasonable, nice thing.

Does your H have issues around money? Does he ordinarily like to put you down?

It is a bit odd to give a tip for this type of service

Tana433 · 17/10/2024 11:19

@BeanBeliever You've got me worrying about that now because i'd just taken some out of the cash machine and done a shop, im pretty sure it was a £10, i would have checked when i took it out of my purse(im pretty sure!)

@Alalalala He is quite tight with money to be honest, he definitely would have waited for his change!

I almost always round off to the nearest note if I pay cash for services. Yes, every time I am being asked if I am sure but I just take it as a silly British question. I don't think anyone has ever said, "Now you asked, I am actually not sure. Can I have my £1.01 back, please". Equally, I don't think anyone has ever been offended by a tip.

So if you go into Tesco & pay cash, you tell them to keep the change? How bizarre.

I quite clearly said for "services". Tesco is not a service. Having said that, have you never just popped to a corner shop and put your change to their charity box? Or said no to a penny change?

Ok so you go into a bar then for example & round up to the nearest £5, £10, £20 every time?

JMSA · 17/10/2024 15:49

It's a nice thing you did, OP. So definitely don't worry about it Smile

Might do but then it is my mate who runs the bar we go to most frequently and we settle the bill at the end of the night. I would certainly do it at the restaurant and hairdresser even when paying by card. I did it when having a key cut, to pay at cobblers, paying for a taxi, shopping at my local deli and market and basically anywhere that is a small business.

ForPearlViper · 17/10/2024 16:13

I think it particularly nice that you did this in a small independent cobblers. Very few places have them any more and if we want our high streets to retain their character we need to use independent traders. Luckily we have a small one in our local market hall and he's always busy.

Davros · 17/10/2024 16:15

It's fine but, if he was unsure, I'd ask if they've got a charity box to put it in
