South lakes zoo in Cumbria

Please stop going to this zoo. Yes it's £2 entry or a cheap day out, but there have been repeated concerns about how animals are treated.

Animals are depressed, miserable and stressed. There is inadequate food, sometimes no water. Staff are belittled, shouted at bullied. This zoo needs to closed down.

South Lakes Zoo faces animal welfare and bullying allegations

Managers deny "each and every allegation" by former staff, who hand the BBC images of injured animals.

I went years and years ago and was horrified and reported them to the council and RSPCA. Awful place, poor animals.

and what’s your background with this zoo?

maddening · 17/10/2024 08:02

We have been and it is not "£2" or a cheap day out. We have had close animal encpunter experiences and the staff all seemed very pleasant and cared about the animals - did not see any animals in distress at all. This was 2022 onwards.

We had animal experiences at other zoos in the north west also and I would say that they are not out of step with other zoos at all. Not as flashy as Chester zoo (user to be a member there as that is our local one) but I would say Chester zoo is the gold standard of zoos but I though Cumbria Zoo was just fine.

There is a dispute with the land owners who used to run the zoo but were removed due to their poor management and a subsequent smear campaign by the previous owners and former employees though, so agree concerns should be properly investigated re animal safety but I would not assume that this is all true without a formal ruling based on my own experiences there which do not chime with the accusations made by disgruntled former owners and employees

not keen to elaborate Op?

Totally agree - it's in the news constantly for awful welfare conditions and even lack of food and medical care for the animals.

I am I'm the north west, this zoo has had problems for years. I refuse to visit it and haven't since 2017 when we saw just how awful it is..as for my background? I'm not connected to the zoo

It doesn’t matter if OP is someone who works at the zoo or has visited the zoo.

The pictures in that news article are appalling and speak for themselves. The avoidable injuries and deaths those poor animals have suffered is inexcusable.

More needs to be done.

It has been been removed from BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums) due to concerns over its standards. Definitely sounds like one to boycott - places like this give good zoos a bad name. Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is another one to avoid.
