Please help, need non-gendered terminology for thinking styles

In scientific language, I'm talking about -

"The "male brain" is a defined psychometrically as those individuals in whom systemising is significantly better than empathising" - [and ergo that female brains being generally speaking the opposite.]

or

"male brains are structured to facilitate connectivity between perception and coordinated action, whereas female brains are designed to facilitate communication between analytical and intuitive processing modes."

Can anyone think of or suggest another way to describe these contrasting styles/traits/strengths/approaches, in a way that doesn't cause consternation due to gender/sexism based implications?

YABU - stick to the male/female language, it's scientifically used (albeit also scientifically contested!)

YANBU - and I do/do not have a super alternative for you.

I'd just say "systemising brain" and "empathising brain". But more importantly, I'd emphasise that the claim this linked to sex of gender is controversial and there are massive overlaps between the two types. Most people are 60%S and 40%E or vice versa, not 100% of one type.

I like this approach best.

not quite, we need a term we all understand for these 2 simple profiles

Who’s “we all”?

There's no such thing as a male or female brain, however a stereotypical 'male brain' is said to be defined psychometrically as being significantly better at systemising rather than empathising.

What does the “stereotypically male brain” mean? as in, does it mean to say it’s “stereotypically male”? As in most men have it? Or what..?

I see. Well if you don’t think just abstract labels- like type a) type b) will work, then “systemising”/ “intuitive” sounds fine.

Yes, I'm going to suggest we choose a single word from the traits, like those, and stick to them. We'll all know what we mean.

Thanks everyone! This was helpful

If you need to get rid of the gendered language can't you simply call them by their main characteristics "systemising brain" and "intuiting brain"?

Scampuss · 16/10/2024 21:29

Surely you should be using the language of the theories that you're using (SB-C I assume?). Then you can put forward critique/alternative theories - Cordelia Fine and Gina Rippon would be good places to start.

DustyAmuseAlien · 16/10/2024 21:37

Ffs there are many many thinking styles and they are not gendered. The extent to which a particular person is systemising or perceptive or intuitive etc etc does not depend on their sex. I would avoid any binaries because such simplistic ideas are deeply flawed, and many of the words that are associated and illustrated as two ends of a spectrum aren't actually in any sense "opposite" to eachother.

Use illustrations that are hexagons or spiderwebmaps or piecharts or venn diagrams and move far away from suggesting that there's two broad 'types' that people will be closer to or further from.

Every attempt to categorise the differences between male and female brains shows that once you take into account and take steps to correct for sexism and the social conditioning imposed by sexist people, the fundamental differences simply aren't there and what you have is a wide variety of personalities with no identifiable indicators of maleness or femaleness.

BustPipes · 16/10/2024 21:49

Mate. Your language is not remotely scientific - it's a massive bullshit wankathon of gendered stereotypes.

And yes, I do happen to possess 34H breasts and a very curvy arse. So far, they haven't particularly hampered my 'female brain' from working.

Who knows though - maybe my left breast is going to go wild on the whole 'facilitate communication between analytical and intuitive processing modes' shit any day soon, and me and my right breast will have no choice but to go along. Maybe if I wear boxer shorts that will counteract the effects

MayaPinion · 17/10/2024 07:35

That's a really old model. Surely there are much better ones these days.

Talipesmum · 17/10/2024 07:40

Our large company has used this model for a decade or two to describe different thinking / working styles / personalities. https://www.thecolourworks.com/insights-discovery-colour-types-guide/

It works very well I think - I know some people dislike this sort of categorisation but I’ve only found it used amongst us to help us understand how best to work with others, understand our learning and approach styles, and those of others, and improve how we interact with each other.

If it’s something your company needs to refer to a lot, it might be worth running one of these sessions for everyone.

Oh, and we find that there is no particular male female divide here at all - the men are just as likely to sit in the “communicate and emphasise” corner as the women, and the women in the “logical decisions” corner. We just don’t ever think about it in “male brain female brain” ways.
