Cleaning an ex smokers house

Debate with DP. If you bought a house (nice clean house) that someone heavily smoked inside and it smelled of smoke would you clean it?

Shampoo the carpets, wipe/clean the walls/ceilings kind of thing

Or would you

just open the windows and plug an air freshener in? Maybe a heavy hovering(what ever he ment by that).

YANBU I'd clean the smoke out like kim and aggy.

YABU I'd just open windows and air out and cover the smell it will be gone in no time

I wouldn’t buy it.

That sounds grim. Nicotine GROWS!! And that smell with never fully go.

Smoke smell won't be removed with a plug in air freshener. It goes deep into walls and carpets and permeates everything.

We bought a smokers house years ago but luckily he didn't smoke in the bedrooms - but we had to repaint the whole downstairs and as soon as we could afford it changed out the carpets - not sure windows open would have helped....

My dad was a very heavy smoker. When he died, I stripped out all the carpets, curtains etc. I had it professionally decorated - sealed and painted to stop the nicotine bleeding through, including wooden kitchen cupboards and then had it professionally cleaned. That seemed to do the job.

Had this with my Fathers house when he died.
Bowls of white vinegar really get rid of the smell effectively - even the estate agent was amazed at the difference it made. Left several around while I was clearing the contents, smells were mostly gone within a week.
I may have had curtains cleaned or washed them, but definitely didn't replace carpets.

Had a buyer before the probate had come through, had to wait to exchange.

A friend of mine bought a house like this and had to strip off the existing plaster and get all the walls replastered. They tried to deep clean it but couldn’t get rid of the strong smell.

I'd be redecorating the entire house not just cleaning it
