Would you choose Dubai as a holiday destination?

Colleague told me excitedly she has booked to go to Dubai with her family for two weeks. I said ‘Oh wow!’ But really I was thinking 😬
I realise we all like different things, but just curious if you’d choose to spend your money on going to Dubai? I can personally think of some really lovely places to go for that amount of money, especially over Christmas

For the last few years we have gone for New Year and it's fantastic. Me and DH goon Boxing Day and have 3 nights on our own then move to Atlantis for the New Year celebrations where we are joined by our adult DC and its fabulous. Great weather, great service and a totally relaxing break.

DisabledDemon · 17/10/2024 21:35

Nope. I know lots of people do enjoy it but I'm afraid that their record on women's rights is so appalling I could never bring myself to go.

JMSA · 17/10/2024 21:37

No. It wouldn't be for me and also it's too hot.

CommonAsMucklowe · 17/10/2024 21:55

Awful backward country run on slave labour. You're nothing without millions. Too hot, too sexist and too "religious" though what they get up to behind closed doors doesn't bear thinking about.

So much like Rome? Or the US?

As I understand it, Rome and the US have now stopped enslaving people.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/10/2024 22:08

No - I've been and thought it was exceptionally boring for a holiday - the sea and beach wasn't nice and it was way too hot sat round pools even in May - ( 46 when we were there) - the one thing I did enjoy was the dunes buggy driving - I didn't think food was that great either , it all had a fake slightly American kind of feel and it was very expensive and drastically expensive if you want to drink at all.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/10/2024 22:15

@AsFunAsEnglishWeather - yes- despite me not liking it I can honestly say I wasn't bitten once - so it wins points on that!!

Sheknowsaboutme · 17/10/2024 22:27

I have a relative who lives there. Been there for 20 years for Emirates. Countless times i e been offered a holiday, half price flight and free accommodation.

and i keep refusing. I loathe the place even though ive never been. Not my cup of tea, hate hot weather!

Crikeyalmighty · 17/10/2024 22:34

@TheConvalescent funnily enough we kind of went for some sun in late spring and thought it would be nice sitting around the pool or the sea- none of it was nice, our hotel pool managed to be both totally in the shade by the massively tall building and yet unbearably hot at the same time - the sea was not nice and kind of too warm- I kid you not I went with my son 4 months later to Benidorm for his 18th and enjoyed it far more- skyscrapers yes and the beach was way nicer, more to do and was drastically cheaper- stayed up the end where the Brits don't tend to go and it was great.

pinkstripeycat · 17/10/2024 22:35

My SIL loves it but she loves shopping and is impressed by money.
I’d rather see blue sky and sit by the sea with a few trees blowing in the wind

converseandjeans · 17/10/2024 23:12

I don't fancy going at all but can see why some people would enjoy themselves.

I read something on here about rich men flying women out there & doing all sorts of depraved things to them. Making them eat horrible things & have a few men at a time. That sort of thing. It sounds horrible.

I'm also put off by influencers heading out there. It seems a bit fake.

I can't afford to go anyway. I'll stick to camping in France.

If that’s your objection, why not go in the winter? The temperatures are very pleasant during the day. You might need a sweater in the evenings.

TheConvalescent · 16/10/2024 09:37

I used to live there, and it's puzzling to me why anyone would go there on holiday. Leaving aside entirely the human rights abuses, the heavy surveillance, and the fact that it's a dictatorship with a heavily self-censoring press and a ruler with a bad habit of kidnapping and imprisoning his own daughters and whose behaviour towards his ex-wife amounted to, in the words of a UK high court judge 'a campaign of fear, intimidation and harassment' to the point where he lost his paternal rights because he can't be trusted to see them -- it's an environmental disaster on the grounds of water desalination and consumption alone.

This.
And no, I won't be going.

mjf981 · 18/10/2024 05:24

Nope.
And I quietly judge people who do want to go there. It is all that is wrong with the human race and the way we treat each other, and our precious world.

Mummamap · 18/10/2024 06:57

I love Dubai. Yes go. Don’t stick to just the tourist areas. Go for a hike in the Hatta mountains, drive through the desert and see a sunrise. Obviously luxuriate at a hotel with a clean beach and super pool but there is so much more to Dubai than the glitz and gloss. People are very closed minded about the Emirates as a whole and don’t understand the region. I have had friends tell me they are going to Dubai on holiday and when I have asked them where they are staying they will say Fujeriah or Ajman etc.. there are seven Emirates and they all offer something different and they are all worth exploring. Don’t be fooled by the bad press stories. The people are friendly and it is a very safe place to holiday.

Sorbiecorner · 18/10/2024 07:02

Been once for a few nights enroute to Australia. Wouldn’t go again. Once was enough.

Absolutely NOT, never, I'd pay NOT to go there.

I'm a woman and my family member is gay. Why on earth would I go to a place where I have to significantly alter my appearance and still be thought of as that 'disposable, cheap Western whore' by locals. But that's nothing, compared to what would happen to my family member, should he dare to show who he is.

Dubai is like Kim Kardashian of cities. Soulless, vapid, shallow, plastic, overblown, vulgar, cheap and fake. There's NOTHING there for me. I'm not into pools/beaches/cocktails/mocktails/restaurants/shopping/'sun hols'. And there's nothing more there than that.

Furthermore, I know I'm a snob, but I wouldn't be friends with a person who chooses to travel there more than once. Once - ok, maybe, curiosity. More? Let's just say, that kind of person is not for me. You can sun yourself and visit designer Boutiques in multiple countries, no need to go to a hypocritical abusive shithole.

By 'Locals' do you mean Arabs who are Muslims? Is it the colour of their skin that upsets you or their religion and culture? You sound very angry about a place you've never been to and people you've never met. You're right though, you are a snob and a condescending, racist, pearl clutching one at that.

Username056 · 18/10/2024 08:14

If some of the comments on this thread were made about Muslims in this country there would be immediate cries of Islamaphobia. But apparently all Gulf Arabs are awful, terrible people who are “too religious”.

tuvamoodyson · 18/10/2024 08:18

I was there, once, about 15 years ago for a few days. I didn’t have to alter my appearance significantly or otherwise. Are we looked upon as a ‘disposable, cheap Western whore?’ I certainly didn’t get that impression, I was with my husband, do you think that might’ve been the difference? Anyway, I can only speak as someone who has actually been there of course…however, been there, done that, no reason to ever to back.

Iloveautumnwinterchristmas · 18/10/2024 08:19

Maria1979 · 16/10/2024 19:26

Slavery conditions for workers and treating women and gays as crap is your cup of tea then huh? It's mingin.

Did you type this on your phone? Do you own a mobile device? If you do then the lithium-ion battery that powers it contains cobalt...mined in Africa by poor people, many of them very young children,in the most appalling conditions. The hypocrisy on this thread is mind blowing.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/10/2024 08:21

I’d love to go. Probably for a few days en route to somewhere else.

cakecakecake98 · 18/10/2024 08:22

I’d rather visit north sentinel island in all honesty

GreenBlinker · 18/10/2024 08:23

We've done it (as a couple) and enjoyed it, surprisingly there are things to see and do, Atlantis aquapark is enormous and nothing I've ever seen anywhere else in the world, in my opinion it beats Vulcano Bay in Orlando. BUT two weeks ?! That's long... unless they going other places like Oman and/or Abu Dhabi 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes,exactly Username056. The people spouting this racist bile are the exact same ones falling over themselves to point the finger at anyone who dares to criticise Muslims and their culture in the UK. It seems to me that according to Mumsnet Muslims in Dubai=Horrid, mysoginistic, homophobic, arrogant, slave drivers, whereas same Muslims in UK=no threat to women, kind, hardworking, highly qualified, peaceful, etc etc. What a cesspit of hypocrisy this platform truly is.
