To take all our washing to the launderette once a week to escape the daily washing nightmare?

A new launderette has opened in our suburb.

We are a family of four. I WFH, around 70 hours per week. I am also responsible for all the cleaning, cooking and washing for the family. The problem with the washing is its sheer relentlessness. Not only that, but none of these lazy fuckers put their clean washing away. It invariably ends up back in the dirty washing hampers and, if a pile of clean clothes is left unattended, our cat will shit on it so it will need re-washing. I am so exhausted and trying to take some of the daily grind off me.

The launderette has captured my imagination. I see it as a possible sanctuary. It is brand new and shiny with loads of machines and places to sit. I am thinking I could drive down on a Saturday morning, chuck all the clothes in the machines, get myself a coffee and a croissant and sit there for a couple of hours in peace, reading a book.

It won't be cheap, but can I justify it?

Do not put clean washing back in the laundry cycle, only clothes on the hamper gets washed. Nothing gets washed until all clothes are put away.

@Alongthepineconetrail good idea!

True. Any ideas for how to get said lazy fuckers to put their clean washing away?

How old are they?

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 16/10/2024 09:51

Just go on strike. You're not doing anyone any favours by letting them be useless.

RocketPanda · 16/10/2024 09:52

Hang on a second, are you the poster with the husband and teenage boys?

Whatisthisifound · 16/10/2024 09:52

I think that I would try a better system at home. Because the cat can still shit on clean stuff you bring home from the launderette.

Each of your inmates could have a laundry box in their room for stuff that is clean and a basket or whatever for dirty stuff. Then your cat can't shit on the clean stuff if it's in a box and your inmates won't mistake dirty for clean.

I have 2 teens, dh and dog and me. As soon as I get up every single day I put a load on. I have a chest of drawers in our bedroom that I unload clean stuff onto. OK it might just be dumped awaiting putting away, but it is out of reach for the dog to puke on or whatever. And on this chest of drawers, only clean clothing resides! Nothing else.

Washing is relentless, especially when teenagers use 500 towels. But the key is just doing it fairly constantly and making the process quick. I never spent more than about 3 minutes messing about with changeovers to the tumbler etc. I do hang a few non tumble dry things indoors by a sunny window. But as a rule I try not to buy items that are going to cause laundry problems.

Have you never heard of litter trays?

Rude. This is an ongoing problem with our cat. I have posted about him on here many times. He has seen the vet, had hundreds of pounds worth of tests at the vet and there is nothing physically wrong with him. We love him so much, but he's an arsehole who just likes to shit on clothes.

Yes, but you said ‘And why is your cat shitting in the house?’ so I thought you meant it should be shitting outside. Now I see!

ScaryGrotbag · 16/10/2024 09:54

I do this. Then fold everyone's clothes into individual bag. Their bag gets delivered to there room and goes straight in the kallax. Up to them if they then actually put it away. This also then negates the issue of my cat shittibg in clean laundry!

Sandandsea123 · 16/10/2024 09:54

I take washing and drying to our laundrette regularly. Mostly because the machines are large capacity so I can get multiple loads done at once (and I don’t have a tumble dryer), although it’s close so I tend to come home for my cup of tea and send partner to pick it all up when he’s home from work 😂 it’s a smart, efficient idea OP! Do it!

Depending on how kind you are feeling, I'd either
-start by saying that you will not be re-washing clothes that get messy due to not being put away.
-and then proceed to (or start here) not washing anyone's clothes but your own.

If your children are younger than teens, then you might have to supervise them rewashing their own clothes which I appreciate will be a bind, but might give them an appreciation of how clean clothes don't magically happen.

Anyone else wondering it the cat is shitting on the laundry or sitting on the laundry?

We need more details about the "lazy fuckers". The techniques differ if we are talking 30 year old vs 3 year old and whether they are your kids, parents or husband(s).

JanefromLondon1 · 16/10/2024 09:55

Just stop doing their washing and only do your own. It's disrespectful that you've made the effort for them to have laundered clothes and for them to not put them away or put them back in the hamper, especially if it means the cat shits on them. Next time they'll have to deal with it.

Its probably both, cats are a law unto themselves

Some cats do have accidents now and then, one might think they are doing it on purpose but its difficult to prove

Pet owners accept that their homes will include an element of this from time to time

applestrudels · 16/10/2024 09:57

We often take our laundry down the laundrette even though we've got a washing machine (no dryer), especially in winter when it'll take ages to dry on the clothes horse, or if we get really behind and want to clear a backlog.

Joycedelight · 16/10/2024 09:58

This would be my worst nightmare. No way would I waste my Saturday sitting in a laundrette doing the family washing.

Most people pay for fertiliser, it's a free gift.

In what barkin mad world is the shit of domestic cats used as fertiliser? Invite your local cats to your garden and infect yourself with Toxoplasma gondii, Cat shit also stinks. The rest of us have no such wish and will continue to use the rotted manure from herbivores.

winterwarmer8274 · 16/10/2024 09:59

How on earth do you work 70 hours a week? I really don’t understand how this is possible.

That’s 8am-10pm if you work Monday to Friday. Plus you say you do all the cooking and cleaning. How do you cook when you’re working until 10pm???

How do you ever spend any time with friends and family? How do you get time for fitness / hobbies.

Seems like utter madness to me

SophiaCohle · 16/10/2024 09:59

I haven't seen a launderette for years. Feel a bit left out!

Give it a go and see if it works! It's something I've thought about doing as well, though my DH does vast majority of the laundry in our house blso I can't justify it. I just would think it would be nice to have 1 dedicated slot for it in a week and not have to have clothes hanging everywhere drying.

I work at least 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am exhausted.

Mine pisses on the shower curtain there is nothing physically wrong with him he just likes the feel of shower curtain around his nether region we wrap the shower curtain up problem solved he uses the litter tray the only time they ever didn't was when I had a new kitchen and they were terrified and peed on their bed
