AIBU to ask GP for weightloss jab?

Im 43, bmi 37, 5ft 8inc, size 18. Ive recently had my over 40s health MOT at the doctors and ive got high blood pressure and cholesterol (they text and want me to go in a statin). Ive not really discussed my results properly yet with them as we keep missing each other on the phone.

i saw the GPs will prescribe it for those classed as obese (me) and have high BP.

morally should i? Could i use this opportunity with the weight loss jab to change my lifestyle/habits?

@FriendlyFriend Why does this matter?

For any fools out there who think this is 'cheating', it's no different to someone with hypertension 'cheating' by taking their blood pressure meds to have a normal blood pressure etc

Perhaps a few (disturbed) people who easily maintain normal weight are annoyed that this can be achieved now by everyone, that obesity can be treated?

These drugs are a complete game changer and the sooner the NHS delivers them, the better - for our society and for the NHS itself!

It is worth a try but mine wouldn’t prescribe it to me and I’m diabetic 🙄 I have to buy mine - that said it is worth every penny

Not the point of your post @FriendlyFriend , but try to think how lucky you are to be only a size 18 at a BMI of 37! I understand the weight has health implications for you but visually you must not look that big - I’m exactly the same height, age and dress size as you (age 43, 5 foot 8 and size 18- and I’m a single mother too!) but my BMI is 29. You must be very toned and muscular to be a size 18 at that weight, good for you 🤩- when my BMI was 37, I think I was about a size 24!

Btw YANBU to ask for the jabs if that’s the route you want to go down, as don’t ask, don’t get etc (although I would be very surprised if they agreed without making you go through every other possible NHS weight loss hoop first) - but just bear in mind it might be worth sorting out the underlying cause for your weight gain first, otherwise imo you risk gaining it all back again once you finish the jabs.

I went from a BMI of 48 to 29 over a long period of time through diet alone and have kept the weight off - but I did have to understand the psychological reasons behind my weight gain in the first place in order to make lifestyle changes I could keep up. I have physical issues (PCOS and back problems) that make weight loss tough, so I fully believe that if I can do it, then most people can! Good luck Flowers

Its going to be a bit obvious though if it works for me

It’s not going to obvious you are taking the jab though.

My partner knows. And have lost almost 2 stone. People can see I have lost weight. That’s it.

People may speculate but it’s entirely up to you what you say. It’s not cheating. Just like taking anti depressants isn’t cheating. But if you don’t want to tell people it’s entirely your choice. Just tell people you have been making an effort to eat better.

That’s interesting re the extra dose, my friend said something similar and i wasn't sure what she meant. Yes i could spend £30 a week on this for sure. Im going to do it. Its worth it. Im worth it.

i think in the back of my mind i feel people will think ive cheated, taken the easy route etc. but with so much to lose and ££ im giving myself one chance only. Then will be so strict with my eating when i come off it eventually. I just think if its available for weightloss, it works and its approved medically, then why the hell wouldn’t we use it?

You have to take other people out of the equation. Your health and medical choices are no one elses business.
