ds has these and this

he wore them today when we went out. four people assumed he was girl. i just ignored it the first 3 times cos i couldn't be bothered to say actually he's a boy (dunno if this was the right thing to do or not?) but i got fed up in the end and did say it to get this in response. "oh sorry it's just that he's wearing girls clothes" i said "oh i think they can be for either" i was then told "no no they are definitely for girls cos i ordered them for my dd off the website." Well sorry for buying them on ebay from the unisex category!! Completely baffled me. I mean since when are bumblebees just for girls? Obviously mothercare aren't the only people thinking this for 4 people to assume he was a girl in one day.

god, how narrow minded people are!

Red and bumblebees FGS! How lovely and age appropriate for a little child - it seems that boys are only allowed to wear dull colours

i think it is a sign of the times, when I was little (erm, in the 70's ) it was much more the fashion for all kids to wear bright colours but now it's basically sludge for boys.

Don't stop putting him in this outfit, I bet he looks adorable!

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/04/2008 19:30

What, so red is now a colour exclusively for girls? How silly!

nickytwotimes · 23/04/2008 19:30

YANBU. I get so annoyed with the 'acceptable' colour variations for little boys and girls. Don't even mention pink....

nappyaddict · 23/04/2008 19:32

i think it was because of the polka dots or maybe because of the bumble bees rather than the fact it was red?

i think it would depend really on what else your DS was wearing, im sure they werent trying to offend you, if your DS had his hood up then perhaps they just made an honest mistake FWIW i actually would of probably thought similar not so much the wellies but the coat would of just made me think girl, sorry to disaggree but i think it would of been an honest mistake!

sparklyfairypie · 23/04/2008 19:32

yanbu

much nicer than most boys clothes anyway - what child wants BLACK/NAVY clothes all the time

they look fabby

jangly · 23/04/2008 19:32

I think its the spots that make them look girly. Sorry!

nappyaddict · 23/04/2008 19:52

i can't remember what he had on underneath you couldn't see cos it's a bit on the large side and calf length and the wellies covered his trousers. i think he had jeans on.

readytoswiggin · 23/04/2008 19:54

I think they are fab! the whole pink/sludge thing really annoys me too, my dd1 often gets mistaken for a boy in her brothers old thomas coat.

YANBU. I bet he looks gorgeous

Fllight · 23/04/2008 19:58

I'd be furious! I haven't heard people saying'No, sorry, I'm right, they really are only girls' clothes' since I was in the playground at primary school.

Ds1 is into all things power ranger and at the tender age of 4.11 I thought I had lost my sweet little chap - until I presented him with a pair of rainbow coloured wellies, which do have a fair bit of pink on them, and he jumped into them immediately and was infatuated with them.

One can never tell!

I think the bees look totally unisex. Mothercare just tries too hard to put everything into a category, and it's stupid but they prob had too many boys ones and had to choose girls to even it up or something.

I think they are totally unisex.

Oh and today in M'care I spotted some power ranger wellies, reduced, and pointed them out to him, very pleased with my find, and guess what? He turned them down!

'I only like the red power ranger, mummy, not the green one'

Rainbow wellies it is then!

SheikYerbouti · 23/04/2008 20:00

Those wellies and rain mac are cool cool cool

DS1 would love them

He oft gets mistaken for a girl, because he has curly blonde hair and is quite "pretty" I also dress him in fairly bright colours.

thegrowlygus · 23/04/2008 20:03

I think they are great. fwiw I got a lovely red catamini coat from ebay for my DS1. DS2 is wearing it now and both of them were/are mistaken for girls whilst wearing it.

I am with you in red-coated spirit!

SheikYerbouti · 23/04/2008 20:04

Growlygus, I love your name, it's fab

They are gorgeous and totally appropriate for a little boy. I hate the assumption that all little boys have to wear camo and khaki and T-shirts that say "I'm a right little bastard". I still love my DS in bright red - he has a red Zara jacket that the sales assistant really didn't want to sell me, because according to her it was a girl's jacket!

shrub77 · 23/04/2008 20:20

I get the opposite - everytime I put my dd in red, she gets called a boy! You just can't get it right unless you dress them in their stereotypical gender colour

WigWamBam · 23/04/2008 20:24

Dd was always being mistaken for a boy - whatever I dressed her in. Pink trousers, flowery top, hat with GIRL across it in big, sparkly letters ... and they would all say "Oh, he's a proper little boy, isn't he!".

Ignore it. It doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.

nappyaddict · 23/04/2008 20:24

haven't got a photo of the coat but have put a photo of a similar one he used to have. would you think girl/boy if you saw him in the street?
