AIBU to have cold sprouts for breakfast?

No of course I'm not. Delicious little nutty nuggets. I just thought I would post some sprout love because we are getting towards the time of year when people become vehement in their hatred of sprouts.

What I don't understand is why people who don't like sprouts feel that they must have them as part of their Christmas dinner. Every year the supermarkets go sprout-crazy in December. But the sadder thing is that there are fewer and fewer sprouts available at other times of year. Bloody Tesco are only doing them pre-packed these days. You can't get loose sprouts until Christmas, when they also (and bizarrely) do those expensive 'sprouts on a stick' that still have to be cut from a horrible stem that has pointlessly been transported from the field.

Can we not just go back to normal with sprouts and treat them as a friendly little staple that is wonderful unless overcooked?

Very pleased to hear of all the sprouty breakfasts in the thread. I like the sound of all the clever recipes with tasty additional flavours but I am strangely thrilled most of all by the Greek hotel offering tepid plain sprouts and carrots first thing in the morning.Grin Five-star luxury.

If you start The Sprout Breakfast Club, I will join.

Though meetings may need to be held outdoors or in well-ventilated areas…

Congrats - God level breakfast.

Roasted until crispy with a Parmesan crust. Food of the gods

We never had them growing up until after the first frost as my Mom insisted they were better, my Dad disagreed because he said we don't know when the first frost was for where the sprouts were grown and our first frost might not have been there's 😂

I love this 😂

That’s a really good point! 😂😂

I had a lovely sprout salad at the Imperial War Museum of all places, roasted sprouts, broccoli and pomegranite

I love this 😂

Every year the argument happened and when they divorced (not sprout related that I'm aware of) it still continued eg if I'd had sprouts at my Moms for dinner, Dad would be "oh she had the bloody frost predicter out again"

That’s a really good point! 😂😂

I don't know if it was relevant years back though when sprouts probably didn't travel too far from where they were grown.

The grocers by me had some today and they looked lovely and green and a decent size! Might get some tomorrow

Just had some with my fish pie for tea. I do like plenty of butter on them. Other vegetables were also consumed. Dh hates them so I tend to buy frozen and alway have some in the freezer though once the fresh appear I do a swap. I also would have helped myself to the leftover sprouts from Christmas dinner and my mum's stuffing. Both had the same effect🫣

What is WRONG with you? 😱

It's the first time I've started a thread with a poll. Didn't realise you had to vote in your own poll in order to see the results. Surely that must skew all poll results in favour of YANBU??

I voted YABU to balance the result.

Why thank you. You have eased my conscience.

Bookmarking all the recipes.
Sprout stem soup is nice if you have a steady hand and a really sharp knife

Edited

I buy them frozen too - baby sprouts from M&S. Chicken soup with baby sprouts is my usual lunch option when we are down with cold. Quick, easy and nice.

momager1 · 15/10/2024 21:16

god I love sprouts! would have them for any meal , but I live in a very hot country and only can get frozen ones. Not as nice but I still go through a bag every couple weeks...steamed...tossed in butter and topped with ground pepper. Husband just looks at me sideways if it is just a bowl for breakfast or lunch, but I don't care. I do ME. lol

greglet · 15/10/2024 21:34

This thread has just reminded me of the BEST thing I’ve ever eaten, which was a roasted sprout dish at Hicce in King's Cross. I would move back to London just to taste it again.

I actually did have cold sprouts for breakfast last weekend —dinner party leftovers. DH fries them with chillies and crushed peanuts. Hot, crunchy, delicious.

Your DH is a culinary genius

Just remembered something. On holiday in the Canaries and it coincided with our wedding anniversary. So picked what looked like a nice restaurant. Made our order which was steak each and it came with Brussel sprouts as one of the sides. Husband's face was a picture. Definitely frozen I'm assuming.
Eating them all wouldn't have been conducive to later on. You get my drift 😉.

BigBundleOfFluff · 16/10/2024 12:02

Breakfast of champions!
I'm trying to grow sprouts for the first time this year.

Hotafternoon · 16/10/2024 12:13

I love sprouts but my love doesn't extend to eating them for breakfast. 😱
