One morning in Belfast - help!

I have to entertain a lady I've never met for one morning in Belfast. I don't live in Belfast but I will have the car. I can't take her to the Titanic museum because she's doing that at another time. I can't take her for coffee at the merchant because she's more of a beautiful landscape and jeans kind of person.

What on earth do I do with her that would be quintessentially Irish, do-able in one morning and either in Belfast or close to Belfast?

Coastal Drive and/or Giant's Causeway?

Entertainmentcentral · 14/10/2024 23:33

I think it would be a rush and they might be heading to the north coast on a different day. I had thought the same initially.

Is there anything around Strangford Lough direction that would be nice and Irish (or possibly just old - she's American) and involve beautiful views and coffee?

The Ulster Folk Museum, really intersting place.

RubyrubyR · 14/10/2024 23:36

How about visiting the Ulster museum, and then you could fit in a walk around Botanic gardens and Queen's University also. The coffee shop in the museum is quite nice too.

BarbaraHoward · 14/10/2024 23:37

North Down coastal path? You could include the Folk and Transport Museum to give you something to talk about.

Donaghadee and a coffee in Irelands Oldest Pub, Grace Neil’s, followed by a walk down where Hope Street was filmed?

Psychologymam · 14/10/2024 23:38

Black taxi tour is really interesting if she wants to learn more about Belfast and the history of the city.

Silverjellybean71 · 14/10/2024 23:39

Or a walk up Cavehill and a coffee in Belfast Castle? Or a stroll around Stormont - I think they still have a coffee shop, gift shop and postbox?

Bella2323 · 14/10/2024 23:39

Belfast bus/ taxi tour. Belfast castle/ cave hill. Crumlin road Gaol.

Entertainmentcentral · 14/10/2024 23:42

These are wonderful suggestions, thank you mumsnet. Does anyone think one suggestion would work better than the others? No clue how to choose! I know that she's a primary school teacher, funny and warm and well traveled. But that's all I know.

Just ask her - and have a back up plan for rubbish weather!

A morning in Hillsborough perhaps? Lots of nice coffee places, lovely park to do a big walk in. Hillsborough castle too.

BitterAndTwistedClub · 14/10/2024 23:55

Get the train to Whitehead from Lanyon station. Admire the Victorian station. Have lunch in one of the beautiful little cafes. Walk along the coast to the lighthouse, it really is gorgeous. The walk, especially if you do the round trip back to the village is exquisite. There is also a railway museum which is really interesting. An American visitor would absolutely love it.

st George’s market

Montalto in Ballynahinch is lovely for a walk and food. Or you could head to Stormont. There are nice walks and they do a tour but I don't think that's every day.

If it's wet and you're meeting centrally you could do a tour of the City Hall and then get coffee nearby.

If you're keen on Strangford Lough there's Scrabo tower or Mount Stewart. Mount Stewart always takes longer to get to than I expect though!

Seamus Heaney Home Place at Bellaghy?

MrsPeterHarris · 15/10/2024 00:28

If the weather is nice then walking up Divis Mountain is great with amazing views of the city. Decent path to walk on and also has a cafe. Technically it's National Trust (I think) but there's no entry fee.

Grannyinnwaiting · 15/10/2024 09:42

The black taxi or gaol tour are incredible - shame to visit Belfast without a sense of its history and the separation of the communities which remains ongoing. Some lovely cafes and shopping on the lisburn road to finish off with

SoiledMyselfDuringSomeTurbulence · 15/10/2024 09:47

Belfast castle if its a clear day.

DiscoinFrisco · 15/10/2024 09:59

Open top bus tour

Dustyblue · 15/10/2024 10:13

Wow, I really want to go to Belfast now. Since I live at the bottom of Australia it won't be anytime soon! Have fun 😀
