Asking about roaccutane

Posting for traffic.

I had bad acne and took this about 30 years ago. I had terrible side effects and think one was long lasting

A relative has just gone on it. She has terrible acne.

I'm asking if it's improved now? Are people still having terrible side effects? I'm so worried about her. I haven't mentioned anything but her dm knows about my problems.

I was on this in my early 20's. I remember the chapped lips being so bad and regular trips to the hospital for pregnancy cleats before picking up my prescription. And I had to stay out the sun completely - my skin was so sensitive to the slightest light
But it worked amazingly for me
I don't think I have any lasting side effects?
I don't suffer with acne anymore

That's good thanks for replying.

I took it very recently and it changed my life in the best possible way. Yes it is an extremely strong medication and the decision to take it should not be taken lightly but for me it was the best decision I'd made.

My side affects were dry lips, achy and stiff joints, perhaps slight mood changes but all of this was monitored closely by the dermatologist. I had regular check ins, blood tests and pregnancy tests and the care and support was brilliant. I did go privately though so I'm not sure if it's the same amount of appointments on nhs.

There are accounts on social media that document their journey and I found this a really helpful way of knowing what to expect and rationalising that it might get worse for a few weeks before getting better.

My advice for her would be to keep a diary of side effects, because yes she will get them as it's a strong drug, but they should be manageable if the dosage is right and gradually introduced. And also to be open with her dermatologist about this so they can adjust if necessary.

Same for me

Best advice I can give is reduce the dose and do it over a longer period of time, I did 40mg a day over 6 months because 60mg was too much for me even though I'd have been done in 4 months. Made it more manageable, I only had positive long term effects after that.

CraftyNavySeal · 15/10/2024 11:46

I did it a few years ago.

Was very dry for a few months (lips, eyes, hair!) but it didn’t really bother me, I found it much easier having dry skin and hair than being oily and spotty.

Skin still clear 2 and half year later so definitely worth it for me.

It was my ligaments that were the worst side effect. I also had the crustiness etc. Left groin has never been the same. I worked standing up at the time and walked like an elderly person when on roaccutane. So glad to hear this doesn't happen to everyone.

I'm on it and have been for 2 years. Can't say I have any side effects that I've noticed. Just nice clear skin .
