To pay for the phone?

Will try to keep this short!

I have a pony and pay a groom to take care of him on a weekend. He was fine this morning but when she went to bring him in, he'd somehow managed to get his rug caught on the fence (no idea how, it's a new rug and safe fencing!)

While trying to ring me for help, pony knocked her phone out of her hand and the screen is totally smashed.

I am happy to pay for it to be repaired (about £160 because it's a Google pixel and needs to go back to them to be fixed)

Husband thinks she should claim from her insurance.

She's obviously very upset because her phone is currently unusable and she uses it a lot for work (freelance groom). She's been brilliant and is lovely so I feel really bad!

Pony is fine and is in the bad books for causing so much stress!

Id pay the excess for insurance

horseHorseHorse · 13/10/2024 17:39

It's more than just paying for the repair would be. I think I'm just going to pay for it to be fixed.

The groom was on the phone because your pony was in trouble so you need to make good the damage. Nobody’s fault but your responsibility.

This is the argument I'm having with my husband! I've picked up a cheap basic smartphone for her while we decide the best way to make things right!

What is your husband wanting to happen?

He thinks she should claim off her insurance rather than us paying for it.

She may lose a no claims bonus and it seems quite harsh. If she was chatting to a friend at the time it would be different but she was doing her job.

I can afford it so that's not an issue. Really don't want her to have any financial implications - I'm going to ignore DH and just pay for the repair.

Your DH is being ridiculous and you’re right to fix her phone. If you trust her to look after your pony she’s worth looking after too.

roses2 · 13/10/2024 20:27

I've never heard of a no claims on mobile insurance. Are you saying her excess is > £160?? That's a lot for excess. My excess is £60.

But yes I agree with you, you're doing the right thing to ensure she isn't out of pocket.

WanderWomble · 13/10/2024 20:30

This site baffles me, honestly. There was a thread a bit ago about a groom or housekeeper or something who'd had her phone damaged by an animal at work and people absolutely slated her for wondering if her employer should pay for it.

@horseHorseHorse I think it would be very kind of you to get her phone fixed.

Edited

It's not about a no claims bonus, just don't want her costs to go up.

It's a really new phone. Her insurance excess is £150 + £50 for claiming in the first month ☹️☹️☹️

She's amazing with him and he loves her. I trust her implicitly and really don't want anything to sour the dynamic between us!

Finding people you trust is hard - it’s 100% the right thing to do

You can afford it.....
What's she on? Minimum wage? If it were me, and you value her work, I'd pay for it to be fixed.

Wasn’t that the one because she was making social calls while walking known unruly active dogs?

I think this scenario is different in that she wasn’t on the phone to a friend she was calling her employer for assistance with the animal

OP - I would pay for it to be fixed if she is a good groom then it’s worth keeping her happy if she pays on her insurance you might find her seeking employment elsewhere
