To think that the baby on the table next to me in the cafe is being very unreasonable?

Said baby is sat facing me, separated by a glass panel. I am innocently trying to get on with some mindless scrolling on MN, but every time I dare to turn my attention away from him for a moment, he starts frantically waving at me to get my attention back. Then beams in delight when he manages to get my attention. He's doing it again right now!

AIBU to think that the baby is BVU to disrupt my peaceful time-wasting on MN?

He is ridiculously cute, and I also think it's pretty unreasonable to be that cute.

That baby probably doesn't even have a licence to be cute in public! Extremely unreasonable.

poetryandwine · 13/10/2024 15:24

A completely unreasonable baby, OP. Also flirting inappropriately with a stranger :)

I know, the absolute shameslessness of it!

How very rude of him. No one wants to have their lunch interrupted by a cute, smiley baby. I'd hate it myself.

Sending thoughts and prayers at this trying time, @MrsBennetsPoorNerves.

Well, that made me laugh out loud and baby has joined in the laughter even though he has no clue what we are laughing about.

Even more unreasonable!

Does said cute cuddly baby have no idea regarding boundaries?

It would appear not. I blame the parents, obviously.

I was stuck in traffic last week and the toddler in the car in the opposite lane, which was also stationary, was waving at me .... so I waved back, as you do, and he burst into tears and started screaming. Luckily the car in front moved so I could drive off. I'd would have been happier if I'd made him smile.

Oh no!

Agree, smiling is definitely a better reaction!

Log it with 111 in case it’s in violation of allowed cuteness codes?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/10/2024 15:38

I trust you have been pulling faces at each other?

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves, quite. They really should have sat this bundle of absolute joy in front of a screen!

Personally, I'd be contacting social services.

mitogoshigg · 13/10/2024 15:41

Made me smile. Beats the moaning posts!

My toddler neighbour has been amen to calling my name and asking for a story because I did it once when her mum had an emergency online meeting - how do you say know to such a reasonable (and educational) request. We didn't even have kids books in the house so the "story" was a book about the weather!

Bless. There is a distinct shortage of babies amongst my neighbours. Although one couple does have three small grandchildren that visit them often.

I confess, faces have been pulled.

Yes, if only the parents had done their jobs properly. Imagine not ensuring that your child is suitably occupied by a screen in order to prevent interactions with random strangers.

Excellent. I am a firm believer in pulling faces at random babies.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 13/10/2024 15:47

This is a very serious situation. I think it's your societal duty to try a silent game of peekaboo.

I might have initiated that a few minutes ago. But sadly baby has been strapped into his pushchair and is departing now, so we have waved a fond farewell.

Order is restored!

Are you a young man with a fine moustache? Cos my youngest was grizzly and we thought we'd have to leave our cakes half eaten till he sat down at the next table and the baby was instantly drawn to him and giggled for a solid 20 minutes.

ApplePippa · 13/10/2024 16:41

I feel your pain.

I have a similar issue with a cute toddler in a pushchair who I pass every morning. She will insist on giving me a big smile and waving hello. Every. Single. Day.

To make it worse, her mother and I have started exchanging a cheerful "good morning". Why are we not avoiding eye contact and ignoring each other? Why is the charming little girl not glued to her mum's phone?

Society is going to the dogs.

Spidey66 · 13/10/2024 16:46

There's only one thing worse than a smily baby, and that's a giggly baby. How dare they be so cute when they giggle?

HornyHornersPinger · 13/10/2024 17:40

Complete and utterly unreasonable!
My uterus just throbbed on your behalf.
