Please help - why is my baby throwing up every night since Monday?

Hi,

My baby (10 months) who attends nursery has been throwing up every night since Monday. On Thursday she was throwing up all day and I called the GP who said it was gastroenteritis since then I was advised to just try and offer her liquids as on Thursday she was bringing up almost everything she was having

It seems as though she isn't throwing up straight away after eating or drinking, she keeps throwing up the majority of what she had during the day at night. What could be causing it to come out at night? Also should she still be throwing up today if this started on Monday night?

Thanks

Phone 111 for advice/to see an out of hours doctor. Vomiting since Monday is too long especially for a baby. X

user242526 · 12/10/2024 21:20

@MoseSchrute so initially when I called on Thursday it actually went through to 111 because my surgery was closed for the afternoon and she said because my DD doesn't have a temperature and still has wet nappies she's not too worried and doesn't need to see her in person. But what I'm worried about is how it's been every night since Monday?

If you are worried don't hang about call 111 or get yourself to children's a&e

My one year old is vomiting or having diarrhoea frequently after gastro which like @Slippersandrum said I think she has become lactose intolerant. We have switched to oat milk and are cutting out dairy but maybe it would be worth you seeing a go since your baby is a little younger.

user242526 · 12/10/2024 21:51

@Slippersandrum & @Thumberline she's got CMPA so her milk doesn't contain dairy. It's Neocate so I'm not sure if that's the case.

I suspect it may actually be that she was accidentally given dairy at nursery and that it may not even be gastro because I've never known vomiting from gastro to last 5+ days.

Whenever I call out of hours they don't seem too concerned as she's still having 3+ wet nappies a day and the doctor on the phone who I spoke to out of hours said you need to just ride it out as even in hospital they'd just keep us until she was able to keep milk down and then send us home (I thought that she kept her feeds from today down until most of it came out at night today) so doctor said it would be pointless to take her unless she started to become dehydrated and less responsive etc

I don’t know if this is the same, but when my daughter was 2 she went through about a week of being sick once at night in her cot shortly after going to sleep. She seemed fine during the day, no issues eating/drinking etc. I was tearing my hair out and after docs/hospital/much Googling it was actually Mumsnet where I found something similar. It might be a UTI - we got our daughter tested for a UTI and she had a mild one; got some antibiotics and the vomiting stopped.

It may not be related but we had to proactively ask the hospital to test for this.

As always trust your instincts; if something doesn’t feel right, don’t take no for an answer.

@inthetrenches1 did she have a temp? My daughter doesn't have a temp so doctor ruled out infections but I've just googled the symptoms and she does have quite a few of them. Her wee does have a 'different' smell I just put it down to it being more concentrated from lack of drinking as much but it is something I should ask about.

How do they test a baby for UTI as they can't really wee in a pot like adults can?

Thanks

Could it be to do with her lying down at night? Acid reflux etc often is worse at night because angle means stomach acid goes back up the esophagus.

Top tip for this. Sit her in a washing basket/bucket naked (watching tv maybe) til she wees then pour it into a little pot. Our DD had a few UTIs as a baby and this is what we were told to do and it works great.

@Itsmahoneybaloney thank you very much. Can I ask what symptoms did your DD have? Thanks

@Kizzy192 could be. She does suffer quite a bit with her reflux but it's quite a lot in quantity - more than what I would class as reflux

I would just cut out the milk altogether, we were told to do this once after my son had a diarrhoea bug around age 1 and just wasn't recovering well. He was mostly on Oat milk too rather than cows milk. We cut it out, he didn't miss it (replaced it with warm water in a cup before bed) and he then recovered quickly. He did go back to milk later but not quite as much as before.

Pyloric stenosis?

Garlicnaan · 12/10/2024 23:25

My son had the exact same thing, at a similar age I think, maybe a bit older? He seemed fine in the day after a few days of illness but was sick once every night for about a week after.

He would even be sick in the night and not even wake us up, just rolled over and went back to sleep which was alarming!

The food wasn't digested and I put it down to having a sensitive stomach after his illness. He had no temperature and was otherwise ok in himself. Hopefully it will stop soon.

No she didn’t have a temp, she didn’t have any other symptoms as I recall, which made it so frustrating. We went to A+E in the end and she was still in nappies, they have a small plastic bag you essentially sellotape around their bits and it stays on until they do a wee, so quite a bit of waiting if they’d already done one just before!

It may not be the answer and things may clear up in the next few days, but you never know, it might work.

user242526 · 13/10/2024 14:43

Just thought I'd update incase anyone in the future is confused or worried about their little one.

We took her to A&E this morning and she does have a UTI. She's been given antibiotics.

Thank you for all the support on this thread. Really helps when you feel helpless to have some support.
