To be pi--ed off with Next sending me something I don't want and then charging me for it

I have just received my statement and have noticed that they are charging me £3.75 for their directory which I never ordered not want. I have now sorted the situation with them but I find shocking that they are holding people to ransom like that especially since when you order online you don't seem to have an option to pay apart from opening their credit account. No doubt a lot of people must get caught thinking they paid off their account only to have interest piling up on £3.75 without their knowledge. It is not a big sum but it might affect one's credit rating if left unpaid in the long run.

But apparenlty I am the first every customer to have had an issue with this an complain. Funny that!

It states in the terms and conditions that when you open an account you will be sent a directory at the cost of £3.75, so it's not unsolicited goods.

It may be annoying but it's something you agreed to when you asked to open an account with them.

needahand · 23/04/2008 17:43

2 girls. As I said before, just because something is in their terms and conditions doesn't mean it is fair or reasonable. I wonder what UCTA would have to say about it.
I remember clearly that when I ordered you had the choice between paying for the delivery or receiving the catalogue at a cost of £3.75. At the time I thought what is the harm. So yes I did agree to pay for the first catalogue which I did. The box did not mention subsequent catalogues and they certainly do not bring enough attention to what is essentially an unreasonable and unfair term.

I opened my account online and it does say that you will will be sent a directory twice a year as long as you are an active customer and will be charged for them.

NickiSue · 23/04/2008 18:07

It unsolicited when I didnt ask for a catalogue OR account! And I'm 100% sure I didn't.
Its definitely something that needs looking into - Im not the only person I know of who has receive a catalogue and had an account opened without consent.

2GIRLS · 23/04/2008 18:10

If you're sure you didn't open an account ask them to prove that you did.

If you sent something in by post they should have a record of it, the same goes for on line applications.

zippitippitoes · 23/04/2008 18:12

but however you end up with it if you request they should cancel they have mine and wipe the charge

I'll do that 2Girls. I have rung them in the past and said "Stop with the catalogues etc already - don't want anything from you etc" only to be told time and time again I'll be wiped from the system but it goes on.

Should I be worried that even after moving house I've received a catalogue to the new address, with my name on etc (when I havent contacted them to change addy or anything.

The more I think about it, the more miffed I am, especially it being on my credit file!

NickiSue · 23/04/2008 18:17

Just to add, theyre not asking me for the £3 anymore its just "there".

needahand · 25/04/2008 17:19

oh well they collected that directory. Let's see if they actually wave the fee now

I've had the same problem with them. would like to buy things from them online, but they dont seem to allow this without sending the catalogue out too. Why would I need the catalogue if i was shopping online? Put me right off ordering from them, wont be buying any more from them unless they will let me do it without the catalogue.

LazyLinePainterJane · 25/04/2008 17:35

I have just been charged for a directory that was never delivered. Called them up, mentioned it, she said they would send one out and I said that I didn't use them, could I not receive them in the future.

The woman said that would be fine and wiped the charge from my account! They were lovely. Which is not something I think often.

Hi Chequers

. Looks like the changing hospital bit is not as easy as it seems. My midwife said: go and see your GP to be referred. My GP said you don't need a letter just turn up there (which I think is rubbish and I told her that I don't think it works like that). Will let you know how its goes but doesn't seem that easy! Had my scan though and baby nah's kidneys were fine yipee!

End of hijhack

i haven't bought anything from next since 2003 when my £100 gift voucher i was using to pay for stuff from the directly magically disappeared when it arrived at their office. i know it disappeared when it arrived there because the cheque i sent in the same envelope was cashed! still makes me v. v. angry. i had to pay it myself in the end because they were threatening my credit rating.

needahand · 25/04/2008 17:48

Chequers - will update you on our antenatal thread but I suspect it will take a while. I will probably have to enroll the support of my IMW! Are you well?
