To dislike her first school photo

It really is awful.

I was so excited about her first one but it just hasn't turned out great.

I'm thinking about taking my own photo of her in her uniform, but how do I then get them printed in the school package form?

if you have a max spielman or similar photoshop locally then take her in her school uniform to have a picture. Compared to Tempest costs quite reasonable, you can have several taken and choose the one you like and if you want to buy a package of prints/ digital pics. I had to do this as DS is autistic and it was hard to get a relaxed looking picture during school photo day.

School photos are never great imo, my beautiful dd looked like a toad in her first one, I still bought it though. The worst ones ever were the communion photos, they were blurry and unfocused, and they had a white background which seemed a weird choice for girls in white dresses. Also my dd wears glasses and there was a glare in them, you couldn't see her eyes! Considering that it was a professional photographer they were a disgrace, that was the only time I didn't buy them, I complained too which is very unlike me.

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 12/10/2024 13:07

I hated mine too.

Take your own pictures. Use Adobe to remove the background.

Go on a free website like pexels and choose a background of the type school use. Ours is like little spots of light.

Print off various sizes on Snapfish.

I'm amazed schools don't do this themselves. Be a great fundraiser.

EverythingIAm · 12/10/2024 13:12

I rarely bought the school photos. I can take better photos myself on my phone.

constantlylactating · 12/10/2024 13:14

My son was in reception last year, his photo was horrendous. I took him to max speilmann after school one day, freshened him up and got a gorgeous photo which now sits pride of place. The man in the shop said people do it all the time!

IggyAce · 12/10/2024 13:15

They are usually rubbish and overpriced, I’d consider booking a local photographer and getting some taken in uniform and a nice outfit.

SnobblyBobbly · 12/10/2024 13:15

I was the same - I took her for another professional one out of school which was much better 😆

It was 14 years ago now, I forgot I'd done that until I saw this post!

It was just a joke @DappledThings.

As I said in my first line, you’ve clearly been lucky. I’m glad you’ve had some nice ones.

The rest was just a throwaway line because for many of us you’d need bad taste to like them. But I’m glad yours were nice, and have no reason to assume they weren’t great if you say they were, as I haven’t seen them. We have a couple of nice ones - so i know it is possible.

Apologies. I missed the tone!

They're pretty handy for being able to identify any one of 2000 kids that you've got in a school at any given moment.

(The companies provide a licence and download for the MIS).

That’s what I reckon they do them for. And then get the parents to subsidise it.

Apologies. I missed the tone!

Don’t worry. I see someone had posted a bit meanly just before so it’s easy to misread tone when there’s a string of responses.

My son is in year 3 so not his 1st but I was so disappointed. I sent him in with his hair looking nice and his uniform tidy and he pulled a stupid face in each picture with his eyes half open. I said what on earth did u do that for? I don't get why the photographer didn't say anything. I was going to give his nans a picture at Christmas but honestly they were that bad.

School photos are outdated, from an era when we didn't all have decent cameras

They should be banned, lost teaching time.

School photos are needed to ensure there is an uptodate photograph of every child uploaded to their school file, and is the most efficient method in terms of teaching and teacher time.

OP, if the quality is poor, then tell the school office. If lots of parents report the same thing, the school is might look for a different company for next year.

He did it because he’s in Year 3. When he’s in Year 8 he will be spending hours doing his hair to look just right (even though he pretend he doesn’t) and when he’s Year 11 he’ll look as scruffy as he can. When you put them together over the years as a collection it’s lovely to see the progression as they grow up.

CherryPieSkies · 12/10/2024 16:04

My child has just started secondary school & I have never bought any of her school photos throughout primary school.
They have always been awful, or just bang average, have got loads of gorgeous photos of her doing the things she loves & just don't feel the need to spend over £20 on a bunch of posed shots where she's in school uniform & forcing a smile.
I just don't get it. So I don't buy them.

bakewellbride · 12/10/2024 16:07

Was it Kittle photography? My son is in year 2 and we just had his - it is just so rushed and doesn't look right at all! Its bad! His other 2 were the same. I emailed the school to complain, I don't even care that it makes me That Parent. I've just spent nearly £20 on 2 tiny photos so am allowed to not be happy if they are crap!

My friends kids pics and my nieces all turn out great, it's not fair.

PeloMom · 12/10/2024 16:10

My kid hated school photo day and never looked happy on the pictures- everything was so noisy and chaotic and put the kids out of their routine. As they grow up gets a bit better

happinessischocolate · 12/10/2024 16:41

Most of my dc school photos were awful, the most memorable one being when dd created a weird side parting and scraped all her hair over at the last minute, so she looked like she had a comb over 😂 dc are now in their 20s and it's actually one of my favourite photos now as it's so hilarious

Don't expect school photos to be great, theyre just a snapshot from a moment in time at school.

Downandout21 · 12/10/2024 17:46

As far as I've seen, mine where all done as a kid and DSSs are always lovely, so no idea what went wrong for DD. They are at different schools so different company.

In the end I bought a cheap white shower curtain, put the toy box infront of it and sat the kids on it. They have actually turned out really well.

My DS’s reception picture was quite nice but so over exposed he looked like a ghost. I tended to but every other year and I think year 3 was really good. The others are meh. I didn’t buy one that was on a weird angle and made him look heavier than he is. He looked like a Tory councillor 🙈
