To think this is enough toys for a 2 year old?

teddybeartown · 11/10/2024 15:30

Had my social worker around and she asked to see my 2 year old's bedroom.
She looked around asked if his toys were in the cupboards but she was surprised when I said that no, they were all displayed where she could see.

I really thought it was more than enough for him. What do you think? Is it enough? Are they age appropriate? Does he need more? If so, what?

Thank you

You have plenty - the only thing that seems to be missing to my mind is jigsaws they are really good for cognitive development .

however.. that said that would be on my list for Christmas presents not something you need to rush out and buy

orchard toys are really good …

I will also add junk modelling , give them an empty kitchen roll , an empty box , pinecones you can collect on a walk also have great fun and value .

The library is great for books that cost nothing but gives purpose for a trip out

Hmmmmamilucky · 11/10/2024 20:36

More than enough, how ridiculous that people commented….what a consumerist society we live in - I wish my 2 year old has less as she hardly plays with the ones she has

MumChp · 11/10/2024 20:39

More than enough!

Library is great for books. They outgrow them so fast.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 11/10/2024 20:45

It's more than enough, lots of children have souch stuff but don't actually engage with a lot of it because it's overwhelming.

At this age children learn most by engaging in loose parts play/treasure baskets of real life items which stimulate their imagination. SW should know this & will be looking more at how you engage with your child- are you talking to them, singing, reading stories, drawing etc which is alot more important that amount of plastic toys in your house.
If you want to get more visit some charity shops.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 11/10/2024 20:48

Childcare settings & schools are being actively encouraged to get rid of the amount of single purpose toys they have because it's been shown to limit children's development in terms of imaginative play. If you feel you need to add anything then look at 'real life' items, sensory & messy play but sounds like you have a good range already.

As someone who sends home some colouring pencils and colouring sheets for dc who have nothing at home, im in a way surprised but this however there are times in which those under ss are held to much higher standards. Also of course those under ss which minimise the reasons they are so. I'd be very surprised this was flagged as a problem if the involvement was nothing to do with anyone or anything currently in the home

Sorry if it was unclear, the SW wasn't called for that, she was called to check on the home and discuss safeguarding following a serious allegation against the kids' dad. She did however check the house including my son's bedroom and made that comment. No plan was put into place and the case was closed as she was satisfied I was safeguarding the children, but the comment just stuck with me.

His arrest did mean the loss of an income in the house so maybe she thought about it from a financial point of view? I'm not sure.

She shouldn't have made that comment. You are doing fine.

Sounds like a fair amount of toys but not loads. My two year old has too much though and is not contained in his room. 2/3 cars is a small amount of cars i would say?
Depends on the child mine gets bored quickly and likes to have a range of toy options loves cars and vehicles and has lots of them.

Could I please ask for some suggestions of cars? Are hot wheels any good or are they too small?

Of course it's a lot of toys. It doesn't sound like the toys is an issue though,

liveforsummer · 11/10/2024 21:36

@teddybeartown in that case under the circumstances you describe then I'd think no more of it. It's plenty for now and as is coming up in no time so no doubt stuff to add!

onwardsup4 · 11/10/2024 21:38

Mine has the hot wheels type mainly because they've been handed down from his big brother. He has a little people garage that he likes too. Don't feel pressured to have to buy extra stuff though? Are you happy with the amount of toys and is the child that's all that matters. Christmas is coming anyway!

sunstreaming · 11/10/2024 21:40

Children's development is better supported by them using their imagination when they play with everyday objects: yogurt pots/saucepans/keys/shopping bags/dressing up clothes like hats, scarves/sieves/plastic jugs/plastic or picnic cups & saucers/ things you and they have made together. It's not all about spending money. Your child seems to have more then ample 'toys'

Hayley1256 · 11/10/2024 21:42

Toot toot cars were always a hit at that age, along with the toot toot garage (I think it's vtech). Bluey toys look quite good these days. Does he have any soft toys like teddies?

Waffle19 · 11/10/2024 22:02

I think that sounds fine, my only observation is you’re lacking any musical instruments! Get a couple of plastic water bottles and fill with rice and pasta, but a cheap tambourine etc.

My favourite thing to do is also collect loose parts like an egg box, kitchen roll holder, pine cones etc and put them all together into a mystery box for DC to play with every now and again when bored of toys.

Sorry appreciate you didn’t ask for ideas but just in case it’s helpful.

POTC · 11/10/2024 22:15

Fisher price little people cars would be better than hotwheels for a 2yr old

You said the toys are all in his room, so is his artwork. That's more likely to have been what she found odd. Unless you are shutting him away in his room all day he doesn't have access to his toys. Neither of those are good.

TheBirdintheCave · 11/10/2024 22:33

Sounds like plenty of toys. We have a tiny house and my son's toys (bar the books and soft toys) all live in a storage box and cupboards in the living room. We have to keep the house tidy or else there's no space. I wish we had a play room! ☹️

Crispynoodle · 11/10/2024 22:35

A fabulous set of toys great for his age you are a lovely mummy well done you xx

Fiveminutesinthegreenhouse · 11/10/2024 22:40

I'd say he has plenty, I believe less toys are supposed to be better for development aren't they? I'm sure he'll get more at Christmas. If you are wanting to buy cars I'd definitely recommend Hot Wheels. My DS has hot wheels cars that he got at 2 and still plays with now at 7.

YourLastNerve · 11/10/2024 22:43

Its plenty

DH and i have tons of money. At 2 our kids had a few cuddly toys, a load of brio, a big box of duplo, a toy kitchen & food, a set of musical toys, playdo, a few cars (not many, think it was a set of 5) drawing and craft stuff, simple card/dice games ef orchard, 4 puzzles and loads of books. Plus scooter & balance bike outside. If we had anything else they never played with it.

Hot wheels monster trucks are really good. My 2 year old also has small cars, which are fine. I would recommend buying a job lot on Facebook marketplace, don’t spend a fortune.

Also, he loves his little tikes transporter which
comes with 2 large cars.

Proudestmumofone1 · 12/10/2024 00:06

@teddybeartown im sorry to hear you are having to deal with the implications of your child’s dad being awful.

I’m sure I have a set of toot toot cars and ramp in the top of my daughter’s cupboard. I also have some of the earlier orchard toys puzzles she has grown out of as she’s now 3.5. And some books.

If it would support you, happy to post to you as I imagine things are financially challenging as a result of their dads actions.

Please message me if you would like to put some stuff together for you x

PS - not actually suggesting what you have isn’t enough though!

Inspireme2 · 12/10/2024 00:30

I would be more concerned the kids feed well and seems happy, content.
Ignore comments!
I do not hang pictures, art work all over my house as pp said. I alternate and frame some.
I would of asked why...who are they to ask, judge.
Dont let them question your choices
Live as you please your house!
Do you resent this? I would.
Unfortunetly my mother had a melt down my house wasnt looking like a magazine and lived in...i do not care!
Ppl 🙄
Ask for the ideal amount and living expectants to shut them up as nice as possible.
Social expecatants delievered by a fellow parent? Probably not.
