GP will not help my son

mummytotwoxo · 11/10/2024 09:53

To sum it up my son is neurodivergent. ADHD. We have struggled with sleep for years. The past 6 weeks it's getting really bad, he's taking 3-4 hours to get to sleep and waking and wondering through the night. My daughters HV mentioned discussing melatonin with the GP, I've contacted every day this week, they cannot even call me back for several weeks due to high demand. I called 111 because we had to keep him off school due to not sleeping, 111 doctors booked me in for a same day phone call with my sons gp surgery on Wednesday it's now Friday and no one has contacted me. I don't know what to do☹️

I'm a GP, unfortunately it's not licensed and GPs have been threatened with GMC referral for prescribing. We are really odd about melatonin in this country - in the US you can buy it in Walmart!

I absolutely definitely wouldn't suggest that you just buy it online. Oh no. Definitely not................

Do you have the link for the GMC?

letmego24 · 11/10/2024 18:54

Not funny !!!

Snowdrops17 · 11/10/2024 18:55

You can buy melatonin over the counter or online from certain countries I've bought it from Poland in the past .

SometimesNine · 11/10/2024 19:05

You won't get the melatonin prescription from the GP, it will have to be either a pediatrician or a psychiatrist. Alternatively, if someone you know travels to France, they can easily buy melatonin in several forms without prescription. We buy Melatonin Gummy ZzzQuil Sommeil melatonine ( Vitamine B6, Valeriane, Camomille, Lavande) - 22.99 euros for 60 gummies.

It’s a myth that Gps cannot prescribe melatonin. In my experience they absolutely can but many don’t know this. My autistic was prescribed it from our Gp. I had to keep a sleep diary for a week and we had tried everything first. My son was diagnosed and signed off paeds at 5, sleep got worse with age and he started melatonin at 10/11 through our Gp. We had tried everything possible first!

I get it prescribed from my GP a regular basis with no referral to anyone else. Low dose slow release and it really helps.

OP do you know anyone living in Germany? Some supermarkets, all 'Drogeriemaerkte' and all pharmacies there store it.
The company 'Doppelherz' do tiny pills with 1mg of melatonin, and a spray version where one puff is 0,5mg - that would probably be easiest for you boy.

Looks like you can buy it online (click on 'online Angebote') but thanks to Brexit I'm not sure they'll ship to the UK.

Doppelherz Melatonin Spray | Doppelherz

Erschöpft und müde? Hochdosiertes Spray mit 1 mg Melatonin hilft, die Einschlafzeit zu verkürzen. Einfach 2 Sprühstöße auf die Zunge geben. Mehr dazu!

You dint need to go to germany t9 find me,at onin. It’s sold in the U.K.,

Example only - I don’t know anything about dosage for children!
But for adults, 3mg the highest dose for sleep and it often works better at lower doses.

Not funny !!!

Is this for me? Im asking if the poster has the reference that GPS will get sent to the GMC. ,I think that is rubbish and they wont

letmego24 · 11/10/2024 20:45

I thought you were joking as she was being sarcastic. I think melatonin was off licence but it also depends if it's in the Gp formulary and if it's only a secondary care prescription

letmego24 · 11/10/2024 20:47

There's no specific GMC link re the prescribing it's just it ( used to be ) off licence

LivelyGoldOrca · 11/10/2024 20:57

So no gps have been threatened?

Ireolu · 11/10/2024 21:27

Melatonin is specialist initiation only. GP cannot initiate. Look it up in the BNFC. They will not be trying to 'fob you off'

Try 'right to choose' for expediting ADHD referral.

loveydoveyloon · 11/10/2024 10:32

Phone them and tell them you will take him to urgent care if you can't speak to someone today - GP surgeries get charged if their patients go there apparently, I was told off by my GP receptionist on the phone for going for a really bad water infection

Pharmacies can prescribe antibiotics for UTI.

PussGirl · 11/10/2024 23:39

DuBoo · 11/10/2024 18:31

It is licensed for ADHD kids.

Yes but GP can’t prescribe without direction from consultant

waitingforthebus · 12/10/2024 07:24

You can by magnesium or antihistamines over the counter. You can order melatonin offline. The nhs doesn't have massively higher standards than the FDA (in the US you can get it over the counter) the difference is that fewer drugs in general are prescribed here because the individual doesn't pay (directly)

Yes, that’s what I said.

beeloubee · 13/10/2024 18:07

Anti histamines or mast cell stabilisers could help. Something like cyproheptadine

Does this need to be prescribed by a professional?

No pretty sure they sell it in supermarkets
