Do you look yourself in the mirror and feel satisfied with what you’ve achieved?

Whether it’s in your career, relationships, parenting, or just in life overall - do you look at yourself and feel satisfied with how you’re doing? Do you measure this by personal achievements, external validation, or some other standard? How do you assess your own success or if you feel a sense of accomplishment when reflecting on your efforts?

This is a great question but I think a person's answer will change depending on the current state of their life.

Some days I feel proud of my achievements and can reflect on my progress, other days I feel a total failure and can only focus on what's not going well.

upsidelow · 10/10/2024 19:49

I meant to add more.

Measuring it is easy, am I fulfilled, and most of the time I am. I have a career I enjoy despite it being challenging, I'm currently studying a post graduate program, I have two happy and healthy children, I'm about to move up a step on the housing ladder, I have a happy and safe marriage, I exercise regularly and I have good friends so overall I feel I'm doing quite well but, some days I'm so tired with the constant juggle, I feel pressured to be an all singing all dancing wife/mum/employee/student

Well, each moring I say,

Mirror, mirror on the the wall, who is the fairest of them all?

But the bloody thing doesn't answer, so I think I may take it back to Laura Ashley for a refund. Story of my life, actually.

Radiolala · 10/10/2024 19:52

I’m really proud of myself. I didn’t think that I would ever achieve much at all really, I was never encouraged to believe in myself (so kind of did it out of spite).

My life is very different to what I imagined because I made it different. It did take something really awful followed by lots of therapy for me to get here though.

cardibach · 10/10/2024 19:54

Yes, I think I do.
I’ve raised an empathic and independent young woman (in partnership wit( her dad, but we’ve been divorced since she was a toddler, so much of it fell to me).
Been an English teacher and I know I’ve had an impact on the lives of many students.
Have a house with no mortgage that I’ve paid for entirely by myself.
Good friends.
I’m 60 this month, and I’m mostly satisfied.

NuffSaidSam · 10/10/2024 19:56

I just aim to be happy most of the time.

And I am so that's success for me.

I don't think I'd be described as successful by someone looking at my life from outside though. I'm definitely not Instagram successful.

NowyouhaveDunnett · 10/10/2024 19:58

Nope. I try not to look honestly.

Didimum · 10/10/2024 20:01

Yes, I’ve achieved everything I wanted to. Everything from now on is a bonus. Of course things may still go pear shaped, so I it’s good to feel grateful for it.

Fairslice · 10/10/2024 20:02

Yes. But I've had 40 years of therapy to get me to that place.

Catza · 10/10/2024 20:34

Yes. External validation is not huge for me and neither is money. I measure my success by how content I am in my endeavors. I love my job and it doesn't take over my life, I have a diverse set of interests, I love my partner although life together is not always trouble-free. I have a close family, I have a few good friends and I have time to spend with both.

Journeyintomelody · 10/10/2024 20:45

I'm not satisfied with what I've achieved, but I'm satisfied with who I am.

I have goals and am working towards them in my own good time. That's good enough for me.

MrsMattMurdock · 10/10/2024 21:08

I'm satisfied with who I am. I wouldn't change myself. I am not perfect but nobody is. I try not to hurt other people and I try to have a positive impact on those around me. My career is a work in progress. My kids are kind and funny. I love my friends and they love me. I have had tough times which have shaped me but don't define me. Mid-40s, I think that helps! Self-acceptance is a superpower!

ncncncncncnchhh · 10/10/2024 21:14

On balance I.e career and relationships I am not doing terribly. Honestly the only thing I measure though is health. Am I eating well, exercising etc. Those are the building blocks of a healthier later life.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 10/10/2024 21:16

I mainly fantasise about my blepharoplasty

Spectre8 · 10/10/2024 21:19

I have a clear understanding of the type of life I want and so long as I am living it then I am satisfied and happy. I have goals I want to achieve because it helps me live the life I wsnt so that is what I measure against e.g. is the money inear allowing me to have the holidays I want. Is my day to day life stress free with no drama

scandiva · 10/10/2024 21:26

I do! I'm incredibly proud of myself. I can never say any of this to anyone irl.

My career has been a dream come true and my husband and DC too.

I could have a nicer house but not a better life (I live in central London so house space and garden is something I I have compromised on).

GalaticalFarce · 10/10/2024 22:10

I'm happy when I look in the mirror. It's the camera that never lies and I'm not happy with that!

GoldCat255 · 10/10/2024 22:21

Short answer: Yes.
