I’m 8 months pregnant and two days ago I really, really hurt myself getting out of the car. Just heard a weird click sound and now I am in agony to walk about, hobbling and walking at a snail’s pace. Sitting down and getting up hurts and sends a shooting pain through my leg. The only time I am not in pain is when I don’t move it at all. Tomorrow is an office day and even if I get a lift I will be dropped off at least 0.5 miles away and then need to walk across.

I have not yet been to the doctors as I am not sure what they would do.

Would you travel in?

YABU - yes and allow more time to move around the building
YANBU - not if I could work from home, not worth causing worse injury

Sounds painful. You can't go to work in that condition. See your GP or midwife for advice too

Trickedbyadoughnut · 10/10/2024 16:30

No, I wouldn't, it doesn't sound like you'll manage it.

But make an appointment with your GP as soon as you can as your employer might ask for a fit note specifying workplace adaptions, i.e. working from home.

LaundryIsNotmyFriend · 10/10/2024 16:33

Once you have a FIT note send to HR and ask them for an accommodation to allow remote working and ensure this is captured in the risk assessment they are required to carry out

I would work from home.

Xiaoxiong · 10/10/2024 16:36

No, I'd WFH if I could, or call in sick if I couldn't.

I had both PGP and sciatica through my pregnancies, I had to go on mat leave earlier than planned on medical grounds (pre WFH days!!) and was nearly housebound by the end, it's so painful - I really sympathise. If it helps, it all went away once each baby was born so hang in there.

mindutopia · 10/10/2024 16:36

It sounds like you’ve injured yourself. No, when I hurt my ankle (not pregnant), I worked from home until I could safely walk to/from the car/train/office. That’s a no brainer really.

By the way, it sounds like SPD. The osteopath had me back up and running at the gym at 37 weeks after not being able to walk when I was pregnant with my first.

Lunde · 10/10/2024 16:37

Go to see the doctor/physio/midwife to get a diagnosis of what is causing the pain and what could be done. Could be SPD, trapped nerve or disc issue. If you cannot walk then you should stay at home or perhaps call in sick

Id see the midwife or gp tomorrow too.

I think if you are off sick late in pregnancy it automatically starts your mat leave? You'd need to check.

If you want to start your mat leave early they might recommend that, or for you to lie flat or something, who knows. But I'd defo see them and consider my options.

If you want to stay working, WFH sounds like a plan. You could ask if this could be a reasonable adjustment for a couple of weeks to see if it's something like a muscle that's pulled and may be ok. Or perhaps you'll get given a back brace by the midwife or something that may sort you out.
