I’ve been told my grandad is due to have it at 79 year olds. Is this likely to work just need to start preparing myself but trying not to show my stress to him

"Work" in what way OP?
It will help to "clean" and filter his blood which, presumably his own kidneys are no longer capable of doing therefore, it will keep him alive.

It worked well for my neighbour who started at about the same age, at one point she had to have a permanent cannula put in - but she didn't stick to the diet.

What do you mean by "work"? It won't cure the underlying issue and is something he is likely to need for the rest of his life. Other than that, it will work to take over his kidney function.

@Helloihaveplaces : There is an excellent Facebook group, Kidney care uk, where you can find out lots of information regarding dialysis and other renal related stuff from people who are living with renal conditions.
Does your grandad have a choice regarding which type of dialysis he will have?
I can say, from personal experience, I found the prospect of dialysis far worse than the reality.
Encourage grandad to get as clued up as he can on his particular condition.
Knowledge is power.
Good luck to him.
