To think dishes dripping in soapy suds are not clean

Surely they need to be rinsed properly, and then they can be dried or left to air dry

Yet I see this all the time, foamy dishes, so often I do think I might be the one who is unreasonable!

Agreed.

If they aren't rinsed, they aren't clean.

My mil used to do this. I never said a word, thought it might be cultural, she’s Welsh I’m American. 🤷‍♀️

FelixtheAardvark · 10/10/2024 10:44

Not clean. Ready for the dishwasher, yes. Clean, no.

Not clean. Ready for the dishwasher, yes. Clean, no.

You shouldn't rinse dishes completely before going in the dishwasher as it needs the remnants to clean properly, get rid of lumps by all means but sauces etc are fine.

I would rinse the suds off if it were me but I wouldn't be massively fussed, they'd be clean enough you won't catch anything from them l food poisoning etc.

When I was at school I worked PT in the local butchers shop (talking late 70's here) and they taught me to wash up properly.
Stainless steel trays were washed in detergent, rinsed under v.hot (but not boiling) water and then stacked on a clean surface to dry. When moved, any remaining water (of which there was v.little) was wiped away with a clean tea towel.
Still do hand washed crockery/plates/cutlery etc exactly the same way.

As OP says, the rinsing away of detergent & remnants of food is an important part of the process.

I'd rather the suds were rinsed, but I can't say it's something I'd get worked up over.

GreenCandleWax · 21/04/2025 15:31

I always rinse soap off dishes as i read once that the suds can be carcinogenic.

NorthernLights5 · 21/04/2025 15:35

I always rinse after washing dishes. Wouldn't feel clean otherwise.

JHound · 21/04/2025 15:46

I think it’s cultural but I agree with you. If dishes are not rinsed they have not ben cleaned properly.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 15:48

I don't wash in standing water.
I run some hot water onto the objects, squirt some washing up liquid in, use a brush, add abit more water if needed and the use the shower attachment on the kitchen tap to rinse and then air dry
DH washes up in a sink full of dirty water and its grim. I actually use less water than him too I imagine

Katemax82 · 21/04/2025 15:59

I seriously can't understand people who don't rinse!!!
